WOMAN’S MEMORY.
How It Held on in the Case of MeSherry.
“Verdenal,” the New York correspondent of the San Francisco Chronicle;“writes
as follows under date of Saturday:
~ «Ww, B. McSherry of Grass Valley,
who has been here for some months trying to secure capital, ostensibly to build
a mill on some Nevada county mine, suddenly realizes that women have. memories as keen as those of men, fora wife he
left here years ago suddenly turns up
with-an abandonment suit and has him
‘jugged’ in default of bail. It’s arough
‘way wives have of dealing with their
recalcitrant spouses.”
A Raging Fire.
. A forest fire is raging this afternoon to
the east of Grass Valley and half or threequarters of a mile below the Idaho reservoir. From here it has the appearance
of being on David Bryan's farm. The
flames leap'te the very tops of the high
trees and are-sweepingtowards -Banner
Mountain.

Nevada county has been at one time or
another the home of many men who afterward acquired a State or National reputation—orators like Baker, statesmen like
Sargent-and--Stewart,—jurists-like Field
and Hoffman, lawyers. like Garber and
Foote;!capitalists like Hearst and almost
évery’*plrsuit except that of authorship.
It was reserved for Mr. A. Burrows of the
barof this county to fill up this vacancy
by contributing to legal literature a work
which places him among the front rank of
California authors and law writers of the
period. His digest of the last nine vo ,
umes of the decisions of the Supreme
Court of California, a leather bound book
of over 400 pages, has been issued by the
Bancroft-Whituey Company and is already in the library of every lawyer in
the State. Speaking to a prominent
member of ’the bar of this work, he ventured the’ assertion that Burrows’ digest
was the best work of the kind ever printed on this side of the Mississippi. ‘‘Its peculiarity,’’he said, ‘‘consists in its makeup,
It gives you the very pith and substance
of the most intricate cases ina few words.
It makes no attempt to cut down the long
and verbose language of the decisions,
but he boldly translates them ‘with condensed form in apt language remarkable,
no less for its brevity than for its technical accuracy. It is a work that th
already given the writer a state reputation.” :
Mr. Burrows has “been ‘long known
to the readers of the TraNnscripr and the

many cases before the Supreine Court are
said to be models of clean-cué statements

The Telegraph says:
innumerable parties haye tried and exhaused every means to secure some sort
of ahold onthe famous Allison Rauch
mine situated on Wolf creek, a few miles
south of Grass Valley, but up to the present time all efforts in that direction have
been utter failure. E
The object so long sought for by capi.
talists from all parts of the world has just
been accomplished by two well known
gentlemen of Nevada county, Captain
John E. Carter, foreman of the Idaho
mine of this place, and Mr. Francis Burns,
the well known mining engineer of Nevada City.
The gentlemen named have signed all
necessary papers, bonding the mine in the
sum of $70,000, -and are to pay $5000 on
the bond within thirty days.
“Our reporter could not see either Mr.
Carter ‘or Mr. Burns to get further par“

transaction, but the above facts, meager
as_they are, will be hailed with delight
by this entire community. ‘There should
not be-a aman whe has the least-envy_toward Messrs. Carter and Burns, but ali
should glory in what they have accomplished and give them all the encouragement possible.
The success of Messrs. Carter and Burns
means great prosperity for Grass Valley,
for the old Allison Ranch is known to be
rich, and when fully opened yp will give .
employment to hundreds of men.
The mine was discovered’ in 1851 and
worked until 1867, since. which time: it
has remained idle. ,
The first erushing—about one and a
half tons—is said to have yielded $376
per ton. In 1855. eighteen tons of ore
was Grushed at the Gold Hill mill, $338
per ton being the handsome yield, and another lot of sixty-two tons yielded over
$370 per ton. Accurate records of the
imine show that the ore averaged $50 per
ton. ‘The gross yield from 1455 to 1866
waa, in round numbers, $2,300,000, of
which $1,000,000 was produced in the

wants. ‘The mine was idle from flooding
with water from December, 1861, to May,
1862, and in Jannary, 18157, it was closed
down to retain so until the present day.
It was very wet to work. The current
expenses in 1865 were stated at $500 per

Lurks in the blood of nearly every one, in
many cases inherited. Its severest form
is that of running sores on the arms, legs,
or feet. Bunches in the glands of the neck,
pimples, cancerous growths, swollen joints,
and thickening of the upper lip, are other
symptoms. Hood's Sarsaparilla has had
wonderful success in curing scrofula, It
thoroughly eradicates the humor from the
blood, and gives it new vitality and richness.
Mrs. William McDonald, Wooster, O.,
for eighteen months suffered with scrofufous swellings ot the glands in the neck,
Hoed’s Sarsaparilla gave immediate rellef,
the swellings being largely reduced.
Swellings in the Neck.
Joseph Dunphy, 214 Central Street,
Lowell, Mass,, had swellings and lumps on
his neck and face, which various pastes,
ointments and medicines failed to stop.
A shopmate, whose wife had been cured
of a sore on her arm by Hood's Sarsaparilla, 1 hended the medicine, and he
bought a Luttle. In three days there was
a change in the eruption, and five bottles
effected a complete cure, leaving the
skin smooth and fair. Be sure to get only
