event Placer Mine That Cannet
Be Worked. .
A correepondent of an Eastern paper
tells of a great placer mine on United
States territory, which hasbeen work@d for 200; years arid is yet hardly
scratched. It is situated on the slopes
and mesas of the Tuerto mountain,
Santa Fe, N. M., and the secret‘of the
failure of human energy to wrest its
treasure from-the mountain lies in the
fact that there is scarcely any water
on its barren slepes. A. few springs
there are around the village of Golden,
which is said to have existed for 200
vears and to have had at one time
5000 inhabitants. It has now dwindled to some fifty or sixty adobe
houses, and a few Mexican gold diggers are the only inhabitants. The
deposits in this neighborhood are said
to be the richest in gold the world
hasever known, and the mud in the
walls of the houses is suid to contain
some of the precious metal. Every
panful of dirt willshow the color, and
when the bedrock is reached the yield
is @stimated at anywhere from 75 cents
to $1 a pan. “The paifful and primitive methods are thus described by
the correspondent :
. The trath is that but few of them
‘Tget from the ground daily more than
a mechanic’s wages, and those of then
who-have a trade and can get employment prefer that to the hardships
of gold digging. ‘lie means employed
by them to-day are very crude and
‘ginning: a pick and shovel, a shallow
wooden bowl, holding when heaped
about half a peck, and a puddle of
water are the necessary adjuncts.
As before shown'water is the most difficult factor to obtain, and’ no. means
have yet. yet bean discovered to accomp.ish the object profitably without
water. Withahalf barrel of. water a
miner may wash his day’s digging,
but that water has to be ‘carried in
some vaser. several miles, anda burro
side ig no uncommon sight. “The usual method is to scoop out « hollow in
the ‘ground, plaster it up with adobe fo
an to prevent too rapid absorption by
the yround, fill it with water, and
squatting, or on his knees, the miner
keeps dipping and pouring until all the
dirt ig washed off into the puddle, and
the ‘same dirty water ia made to do
duty over and over agsin. To'digand
wash a cubic yard of gravel is a fair
day’s work for two men.
Capital has, time and again, considered the problem, and after surveymade, given it up as impracticable.
The. great elevation of the Tuerto
tract, 6,500 feet ubove sea level makes
it impogsible to flume water to it from
any nearer source than the headwaters
of the Rio Grande, some 175 miles ot
rough country distant. The’ possihility, however, of getting water by arte
sian wells is of recent suggestion, and
is now under trial, Water haa been
found, in unlimited supply, at 600 feet
to bring it'to the surface in sufficient
supply to meet the needs of. the hydravlickers.
Patting vewa the Screws.
“See here for unadulterated gall,’’
said a Nevada City. insurance agent on
Tuesday handing the reporter a circular that-he had just received from the
Pacific Casur ince Union, a paragraph
of which read as follows:
I understand that it would be a violation of my honer as a gentlemin.
to receive, directly or indirscily, from
any company now or hereafter to be
re nted by me, in the form of commission or other vompens ation, whether of office rent, clerk. hire, brokerage,
solicitor’s fees, or valuable gifts from
any such company or from any of ita
representatives, which, in the aggregate, shall exceed the commission now
allowed.”
“I wonder if the Union thinks it
owns us body, boots and breeches?”
he asked, and then he. answere! his
own question by adding: “I wouldn't
aign.that.thing to save the whole hoggish outfit from poerdition. I tell you,
air, the Union i3 turning the screws
down on the public and.o1 as agents so
tight that pretty.soon it will stir apa
muss that will bust the whole combination wide open; and then property
owners will get insurance at reasonable
rates ohce more and agents will be
treated like gentlemen instead of niggers.” ®

an Exciting Experience Down in
Pleasant Valley.
A. V. Hoffman, newspaper reporter,
story writer, artist, violinist, carpenter,
thiner, insurance _ went and heaven
only knows what nt, has been cutting
bee trees down in tiie Pleasant Valley
partof this county, and tells in the
following inimit .ble mauner of the fun
that he and nischum had:
When we had pailed the Worcestershire.cow and put the hensto bed we
took an ax, knife, two buckets, a
candle, «smudge, and several yarde
of mosquito bar, and were’soon at war
with the busy little bees. Cutting the
tree down Was an easy task, but the
fun began when Jack, who was master of ceremonies, hacked a tig hole
into the trunk of the tree and exposed.
the honey. Quite a crowd of bees
emerged and prodded us in various
places, and I went off to a-distance to
rest. Tne bees had their guns loaded
for bear, and in a short time Jack had
the worat of the fight. Then he came
over to me and persuaded me to gu
back and hold the candle for him, and
Iwent, Then the bees found a Boleia
my trousers and went in to investigate,
and . told Jack I would retire frown the
contest. Jack said “ne guessed he
would retire, too.
Then, with a su:iden burat of enthasiastic bravado, I told Jack that if
he would lend me his pants, and fix
the mosquito bar over my head, I
exchange was soon made, and [ went
up and slashed at the honey-comb
with theknife. A few moments later, if you had been in the vicinity armed with a lantern, you might have
heard a noise like the c nftsion of
many tongues, with snappi: g ind popping of teeth, the falling of \re +s, andu
stamping and thumping of feet, as
though a Sixth Ward political bogs had
curried the day, and dropped it on
some other man’s corns; and -yo
miglit have seen a tall angular man,
with eight yards of musqnito bar
around his head, anda knife in isis
hand, dashing hither and thither,
mostly thither, uttering fiendish
acreeches and bloodcurdling yells, trying-ever and anon to jamp over, trees
and dive under rocks, and tear
his ears out by the roots, while another
man, clad ina-rouzh shirt, and conhere, and there like an ignus fatus, ranning into bushes and occasionally but:
ting his head into trees, as though he
4ad let himself out as a stump extractor, and bad not any idea as to
where he was to begin nor when he
was to stop. But we persevered and
got that honey—two big buckets full
of it. Jack carried it home, and I
held theend of one of his suspenders
and followed. My eyes were tired,
and my nose had taken unto itself the
shape of @ large ripe Bartlett pear,
with the stem end affixed to my face,
and my whiskers were all swelled up
on the ends.

Sat Manager Dunn Premices te
Deo ttis Beet fer the Men. .
‘The Marysville Appeal of Sunday
says: ‘The most of the delegation who
came down from Sm irtaville Friday to
settle with the Marysville Dritt Mining Company, returned home yesterday. They had not cometo a settlemeat as yet with the co:upany, but
stated that Mr. Dunn, of the company,
had agreed ' to see that they. were paid
in full before the last of this week.
They, however, are still holdiag over
the heads of the individual members
the threat that if they are not settled
with soon, and infull, they will take
legal action in ‘the matter. The
owners state that during the eighteea
months that they have been working
rthis property they have taken out between $60,000 and $70,000 of gold. If
this is the esse, and there is no re won
tudoubt their word in this matter, it
seems steanze that they shoaild bs so
short of funds as to be unable to meet
a monthly pay-roll of $2,090. If they
make the seulement with these men,
as they have promised to do, work will
be resuued on the mine the first of
next week.
Juha Dunn, the manager of the
company,.called at the Appeal office
laet evening and contradicted the statement made by one of the miners to the
effect that the men had been asked to
accept a percentage of the umount due
them as a compromise. Mr. Duon
explained thaton Monday last he went
to the mine and told the men that the
company bad not means at that time
to pay in full; but that-he would relieve
the needs of all who had preasing occasion for the use uf money. He did not
mean to be understood as asking any
of them: to take a partial payarent io
full of all demands.
Mr. Dunn further says that so far
from having any disposition to keep
the men out of their wages, he will
and tv that end bas made an arrangement with them, and will obtain money
for the purpose from his private and
individual resorees, looking to bis partners in the inining enterprise to pay
their share eventually. He says that
the arastras on the claim are worth
more than all the demands ayainat
thecompany amountto, for the use
of any parties who may desire to work
the adjuining ground. The company,
he thinks, is not owing more than $3,
090, alltold. [he mine, he raya, paid
up to last Lecember, but has: since
been worked at a loss, owing to trouble
experienced from slides.
