K. Weare of Nevada City.) The Argonauts who entered the port of Francisco during the two years just succeeding the dawn of the golden age of Culifornia, cannot fail: to remember the city of hulks which having been dismantled lay moored along the city front and filled the place of storehouse, boarding houses and even churches, Although valuable ships that came there managed to get away at great expense, sailors’ wages being . . $100 a month or more, there were a great number not worth removing. Ultimately many were broken up, but most retained their individuality for years as use’ was found for them. In resurrecting 1849 it occurs-to me . to speculate on the wonderful tales of adventure those old hulks could tell were they endowed with speech. ; Itis known that-when the news of. gold in profusion reached the ears of the people of the Eastern States, hundreds of shipg long invalided and pronounced by the nautical as unseaworthy were hunted out of their snug harbors, hastily fitted up and in most cases scantily provisioned, and were then headed for the golden shore. There was no trouble in finding crews for any compensation or even none at all, for the golden iris that entranced their vision cast a glamor over all: disabilities; Under its influence a Mississippi flatboat would have been transformed ‘into an ocean palace, Naturally these old hulks were abandoned when once within the Golden Gate. They are unable to tell their own story, }but I will: recount a portion ‘of the an. history of one—a history that no other had or’ bhas—the ‘Mariposa’ which was the first I observed on, going: ashore. ¥The name was atill’on the stern, and it brought vividly ‘pack to my taemory an experience of months aboard of her when she was on a mission of mercy in the interest of liberty. She had then seemed blessed by. somie over-ruling Power. The winds had favored her and the waves in pleasant dalliance had caressed her sides in fond‘embrace. Only one of a company of liberated, manumitted slaves had died during a six months’ trip between New Orleans and Africa, and not a sail was reefed or furled through all degrees of latitude from forty degrees north tothe equator, al. : though the stormy coast of Hatteras was .twice passed. ‘‘Mariposa?”’ Spanish for ‘‘butterfly.”” Yet she was no butterfly. Under the most favorable circumstances she could not decision . make eight knots an hour. . Another reason why I write the history ofthe hulk isthis: As one day of late I stood at the corner of Pine and Broad streets in Nevada Oity, there gathered around me alittle company of argonauts. We were all in the same category—‘‘have beens” or ‘‘hulks.”’ We had passed the days of our usefulness, but wé had a Past and a History ; and we also had a most unqualified contempt for the tenderfeet who considered tis as ‘‘old stiffs’ and ‘‘old playedouts.”’ And itwas possible some of us could scure up a history as laudable, if not so beneficent, as the “Mariposa .’’ 9 8 Oe ORR 8 ee I was nineteen, Not quite a man as regards judgment and experience, and not much more than a boy had I been confined in previous years to some daily treadmill where there was no variation. I. was a great deal less than a boy if';my ignorance of the plang, the gage and the tricks of the modern hoodlum were the standard to gauge meby. (I hope the fraternity will excuse me, forI write at nearly the age of threescore years and ten.) I was at nineteen in thé city of New, York. During the preteding four yearsI had sailed between that metropolis and Liverpool in England, and had become proficient in common seamanship, 80 I concluded to leave my uncle and see the world. To that end I took a stroll around the water front. Commencing at East River and continuing to the Hudson I went on board ofevery ship! camé to, asking their destination. For s long time I found none to suit the requirements, for I wanted novelty, but at lest my when I came to the ‘Mariposa,’ ‘which was later the old hulk of San Francisco bay. It is the commonly accepted opinion that another election will have to be held, but the investigation made by this paper leads tothe conclusion that the oversights in regard to advertising the election by postiig notices and in failing to specify the denomination of the bonds in a subsequent calling for bids, are merely technical and not fatal to the legality of the issue. The following article is from the advance sheets of next month’s issue of Howell & Strachan’s “State Resources,”’ which will be largely devoted to Nevada county : Were the attractions, resources, and advantages of Nevada county as much heralded abroad, and as generally well known to the average Easlerner and foreigner who comes to California in order to spy out the land either with the intention of becoming a permanent, settler, only out of curiosity, er in search of something which might offer promise of a good paying investment, there would be hundreds come here to one who now makesthe trip. We do not desire to be accused of making an assertion, which we cannot-substantiate and shall therefore, in as condensed a form as possible, give a few reasons why people would visit this section if they were conversant with its inducements. What brought people from al! parts ofthe earth first to California? Gold>—Nevada county is today the greatest gold producing county in the State, and her mineral wealth is by no means exhausted, New-mines are being constantly discovered, “and a great many old ones continue to add their yearly quota of millions to the country’s bullion product, What took settlers to. Napa, Santa Clara and other counties styled fruit, growing counties, and raised the price of desirable land to from $100 to $600 per acre? Simply the knowledge of the fact that peaches, pears, plums, cherries, grapes, etc., would yield large returns to the orchardist, backed up by the most liberal kind of advertising. Now we have not a word to say in depreciation of these counties. It is an indisputable facf that they are great fruit and wine producers, and that in many cases an orchard of only a few acres, is a@ sufficient competency for a family, But we do say, that, the price of the Tandon which the fruit and vines grow has reached such a figure as to virtually exclude those of modest means, who would like to engage in horticultural pursuits. Wealsoaffirm that as good, and in some respects, superior, results are obtained by fruit growers in Nevada county, though the industry has not been pursued to the game extent, and that land can be obtained here at such reasonable prices that those of very moderate means may secure a home. Especially are the peaches, pears, and apples of this section of superior size and excellence, both for flavor and keeping qualities, so that they are’ favoritea in the market, particularly for shipping purposes, What has served to build up such sections as that which surrounds Fresno, and at the present time to cause the founding of several colonies at Merced andin Kern county?
Water, made available by a series of reservoirs, canals and distributing ditches, so that it could be used for purposes of irrigation. Now there is no better watered region in the State than Nevada county. The source of supply is inexhaustible, the means of distribution are adequate to present. demands, and can be indefinitely increased as necessity may call for them. What brings whole heaps of people to Oalifornia who are satisfied with their income in the East? They want to escape the terrible and trying severity of the long winter. In Nevada county you-cun find a variety of climate,” In the highest part of the Sierras, from whence comes the water supply, the snow and ice never melt. But let us take Nevada City, which has an elevation of about 2600 feet above sea level. Here some snow always falls during the winter season. Last winter was the heaviest ever known and a great deal fell, but it 1! never lasts long, and the cold, as compared with such cities aa New York, Chicago or Boston, is pleasant spring weather. During the warmest days of Summer the nights are always cool, and refreshing.’ The atmosphere is clear, bracing and conducive to vigorous health. Malaria is unheard of. POPULATION, Nevada City, according to.the census justtaken, has.a population of about 8,000. If the resources of the county were anything like developed its inhabitants would be five times this number and its business sharea similar increase, Why is this the case? We can only repéat what we said before. Its advantages are not known abroad, This is owing in part to the fact that it has been looked upon’ as altogether a mining county, and that the suppression of hydraulic mining cansed a great reduction in the annudamper upon mining throughout the State, and itis attributable partly to the lack of available, reliable and widely distributed reading matter regarding Nevada county, for it is well knewn that the principal part of the visitors to California go to those places which have been most prominently brought and periodicals of the day. ———————— Few children: can be induced to take Physic without a struggle, and no wonder—-most drugs are extremely nauseating. ‘Ayer’s Pills, on the confrary, being sugar-coated, are eagerly swallowed by the little ones, and Ace ‘therefore, the farerite family medi boggpenee after 6 o’clock F, m, jcine , ree ob al outpat of gold, and for a time put a} before the public by the newspapers . . It isastonishing what a growth there is. Seven miles across the plains brings us to the suburbs of Woodland the “city of homes.” The alfalfa fields and vineyards aud drooping limbs of oaks, its stock and big barns and drying houses, make us feel that this is afair land—a land of milk and wine. It can’t. be long before the. hill of Nevada county. will be covered with . fruit and nuts trees. Itis near the Central Pacific. It can beat. the lowlands in the race of fruit to the éast; and the fruit, air and water of Nevada county are vastly superior, We can’t get the Crystal Spring down hero, nor the fragrant breath of the pines; and se we smile and try to be content with our grapes and figs and red cored “‘water-millions.”” Yet we wish Nevada county, endeared by pleasant memories, to get a start in the race for weulth, and from-being tillers of the soil ourselves, and from what we saw around Auburn, believe that the gold is on the surface as wellas in the veins beneath.
