Colfax Prospers Horticultirally--The Anti-Mining Blight: » Today’s Colfax Sentinel says: Why is{it that peaches raised here are bringing from 60 to 75 cents a box, while anywhere below Colfax .as far as you may go, the orchardists are only getting from 25 to 40 cents a box ? Thus it is with. every kind of fruit. ' Why is it the large fruit companies are so anxious to get the Colfax fruit that they will tome to almost any terms? We can only answer this by saying that they know the quality of our fruit and how well it will sell and want to play somewhere near even on what they have lost’ this season by handling fruit from below. An agreement was signed on the 13th instant between the members of the Colfax Mountain Fruit Company and Cook & Langley, a large f uit company of San Francisco, in which Cook & Langley agree to take all of the fruit consigned to them by the Mountain Fruit Company. They will furnish all the box lumber, baskets: and nails, pay all, freight, and will advance 50 per cent of the selling price. There will be no rebate whatever for any loss to the Colfax Mountaii Fruit Company. There is probably no other local fruit company in California that has been made such a proposition as this. What a change in the business of this State could be made now by opening the mines. Hnndreds of homes would be built, thousands of people who would gain a livelihood from the industry would become consumers of the fruit of our foothills, the grain and other products of the valley, and the merchandise of the cities. Yet this must not be because a few fanatics think. dams are not practicable. “In such times as the present when business is dull and men are thrown out of work, it is seasonable to reflect on the results of the work of the anti-debris narrowheads. We are beginning to try to make , ouraelves: believe that the fruit business . should be the leading industry of ‘the State. It has taken a great pronamence, it has caused many booms, but what is there to induce a boom with the fruit prices this year? As a consequence of this dullness all kinds of businessisdull. . No building going on, no demand for lumber, consequently the lumber business is dull. With mining it wa ifferent, The only drawback to that was lack of water or paying ground. The miners have the ground, yet-we cannot mine, and tie water is to be run to raise fruit that pays only for the price of the boxes and the freight. What’s the matter with agitating this the-government's attention to it~ and securing their assistance in the solution of the question, as the U. S. Kagineers have reported. feasible? Itis only three months until-Congreas-assemblea..ome_mighty . work: will have to.be done not only by the miners, but by all who are to be benefited by mining, if this coming Congress is to even realize the great injury done to, California by the anti-slickens crusade. {f it is worth the government's while to attempt to stimulate an industry like that of tin, which no one knows to exist, and to sanction the importation of foreign labor to do the work, is it not worth its while to find work for those already here and who have been raised under the flag? ——_—— #90 NATIVE SONS’ CARDS.
