The Mills men are decidedly hostile to
the candidacy of Representative Crisp
for the Speakership aud unless theve is a
change they will begin to make things
very lively very soon. One of them said
today that he hail the facts and proposed
to publish them showing’ Crisp to be under the coutrol of several noted lobbyists.
It is stated that Crisp will’ get the entire

Eprror Transcrirt—Business in this
city at the present time is notin as lively-a condition as it was in times gone by,
and in conversation with a business man
relative to the time when ‘‘hiz” was good
here he said to me :
“The shutting down of thé hydraulic
mines in the northern part of the State
and the political agitation inaugurated
by Dennis Kearney years ago, were two
of the worst calamities that ever befell us.
Kearney and his movements were the
cause of millions” of dollars in U. 8. gold
coin being taken entirely from the State
and invested in other localities where security to capital was guaranteed ; ,but
what we feel worst is the ready money
that was in continued circulation during
the days when the reliable old hydraulic.
mines were pouring their golden treasures
into our money tills. O, I tell, you, it
was a sorry day for San Francisco when
the closing down of the mines was accomplished, and we will never see the good
tithes we used to know uatil the barrieris
removed.”

Fprror Transceret—Times around
this town are quite dull, but the future
is looked forward with hope of better
times.
The prospects along Canyon Creek are
promising. The claims of White Brothers
and Fritz Meister are doing well. Mr,
Weister says lie will erect a five-stamp
imill this fall or next spring.
Stewart & Co. Have one of the finest
prospects ever struck on the Yuba. The
lode is from 3 to 15 feet thick and so far
is good for $50 a ton.
The Giant Led. con Wash ngton Creek
a mile from town and owned by M. M.
Cole is probably the best in the district.
It is of low grade, but its immense size
will make it very valuable. ‘I'wenty feet
of it will go$5a ton, but it wants practical mining men to prospect it, and not
plug hats, gold-headed canes, and livery
teams, which combination has given the
distriét many a black eye iu the past, as is
shown by the history of the Baltic mine,
for-instance:

State Senator Andrew Nicolls of Nevata, who is one of the heavy stockholders in the Centennial, writing from Los
Angeles to Hon. Evan Williams of Carson, President of the company, gives
quite an, elaborate report of his recent personal inspection of the mine. Nicolls
hag been one of the old, experienced and
successtul gravel ininers in the famous
blue lead of Nevada county, which runs
through the Centennial ground, and the
following extracts are from his letter.
Speaking of the gravel developed by the
four short upraises above the main tunnel, he says :
exposed jis 300 feet wide, will average four
feet thick, aid it runs the entire length of
our claim, of which [have no doubt. It is
two and one half miles long, showing it
conclusively to be the bed of an ancient
river, from which all the rich gravel mines
along the Yuba river evidently originated. . v
