sins a nh 0 thet erie priate NEVADA COUNTY. . ” ‘The following article is frof the advance sheets of next month’s issue of Howell & Strachan’s ‘‘State Resourees,”’ which will be largely devoted-to Nevada county : : Were the attractions, resources, and . advantages of Nevada county as much heralded abroad, and as generally well known to the average Easterner and foreigner who comes to California in order to spy out the land either with the intention of becoming a permanent settler, only out of curiosity, or_in search of something which might offer . _ promise of a good paying investment, there would be hundreds come here to one who now makes the trip. We do not’ desire to be accused of making an assertion, which we cannot substantiate and shall therefore, in as condensed a form as-possible, give.a few reasons why people would visit this section if they were conversant with its. inducements. i What brought people from all parts of the earth first to California? Golds. Nevada county : is today-the greatest gold producing county in the State, and her mineral wealth is by no means exhausted. New mipes are being constantly discovered, and a great many old ones continue to add their yearly quota of millions to the country’s bullion product. . What took settlers to Napa, Santa Clara and other counties styled fruit growing counties, and raised the price of desirable land to from $100 to $600 per acre? Simply the knowledge of the fact that peaches, pears, plums, cherries, grapes, etc., would yield iarge returns to the orchardist, backed up by the most liberal kind of advertising. Now we have not a word to say in. depreciation of these counties. It is an indisputable fact that they are great fruit and wine producers, and that in many cases an orchard of only a few acres, is a sufficient competency for a family But we do say, that the price of the land on which the fruit and vines grow has reached such a figure as to virtually exclude those of modest means, who woulddike to engage in horticultural pursuits. Wealsoaffirm that.as good, and in some respects, superior, resulte are obtained by fruit growers in Nevada county, though the industry has not been pursued to the same extent,,and that land can be obtained here at such reasonable prices that those of very moderate means may secure a heme. Especially are the peaches, pears, . [ and apples.of this section of superior size and excellence, both for flavor and keeping qualities, so that they are faybrites in the market, particularly for shipping purposes.—--What has served to build tp such sections as that which surrounds: Free: no, and at the present time to. cause the founding of several colonies at Merced andin Kern county? : Water, made available by a series of reservoirs, canals and distributing ditches, so that it could be used for purposes ofirrigation. Now there is no better watered region in the State than Nevada county. The source ofsupply is inexhaustible, the means of distribution are adequate to present demands, and can be indefinitely increased as necessity may call for them. What brings whole heaps of people to California who are satisfied with their income in the East? They want toescape theterrible and trying severity of the long winter. In Nevada county you can find a variety of climate. In the highest part of the Sierras, from whence comes the water supply, the snow and ice never melt. But let us take Nevada City, which has an elevation of about 2600 fuet above sealevel. Here some snow always falls during the winter season. Last winter was the heaviest ever known and a great deal fell, but it never lasts long, and the cold, as compared with such cities as New Y-rk, Chicago or Boston, is pleasant spring ‘weather. During the warmest dayso summer the nights are always cool and refreshing. The atmosphere is clear, bracing and conducive to vizorous health. Malaria is unheard of. POPULATION, Nevada City, according tothe census just taken, has a population ofalout 3,000. If the resources of the cuiinty were anything like developed its in}: sbitants would be five times this nu:nber and its business sharea similar increase. Why is this the case? We can only repeat what we ssid beforé, Its advantages are not known abroad. This is owing in part to the fact that it has been looked upon as altogether a mining county, and that the suppression of hydraulic mining caused a great reduction in the annual output of gold, and for a time put a damper upon mining throughout the State, and it is attributable partly to the lack of available, reliable and wi Jely distributed reading matter regarding Nevadacounty, for it is well knewn that the principal part of the visitors to California go to those places which have been most prominently brought before the public by the newspapers and periodicals of the day, oe fer Over Haifa Century.
