RACING AT GLENBROOK.
Fine Sport Yesterday Afternoon and More for
: the Rest of the Week.
Although the attendance at. Glenbrook
Park yesterday’ afternoon was small, the
racing was the best ever witnessed on the
opening day at any previous fair held in this
county, not because any very fast time was
made, but ou account of the spirited contests that took place. :
Hon, J. M. Walling and H.C. Mills, of
_this city, and Mattuew. Provines of Grass
Valley, were judges of the races, ‘The
timers were George Fletcher and Pat Riley,
of Grass Valley, and Mr. Owens of Fresno.
A running race, five eighths of a mile and
repeat, for District horses, purse $150, was
the first event. There were three starters,
Penhall’s Loretta, Peaslee’s Azoo, and Benoit’s Eulalie. The first heat was won by
Azoo, after an° exciting struggle,. Loretta
second, Time, 1:08.
Loretta won the second heat in 1:09, and
the third heat and race in 1;12.
In the apecial trotting match for a purse
of $400 there were four starters: Milton S.,
Alcazar, Dandy and Oscar, thie latter being
the pacing horse owned by. L. Hyman. ot
this city. At the half-mile post Oscar led
by sever.] lengths, Lut on the Lack stretch
Alcazar crowded him aud went ahead on
tie homestretch, winning the heat in 2:41 5,
Osear second, Milton 8. third and Dandy
Dandy and Milton =. were distanced, but
by mutual consent distance was waived,
Alcazar won the third, heat in 2:45. Oscar
took secend money, Dandy third.
Tn the 7:30 trotting race, Belle Medium,
Sacramento, Hattie KB. and Lacy were the
starters. The horses got off well together,
Sacramento third. Time, 2:274.
The second heat was a close one between
‘Belle aud Hattie B., the tormer winning
iu 2:274, Hattie second, Sacramento third,
Belie Médium tookthe third heat in
2:283, Hattie B. second, Sacramento third,
Sacramente took the fourth heat. Time
2:29}. ‘Owing to the lateness ofthe hour.

Henry Phillips, who shot one McManaman
recently at Forest Hill, Mr, Burrows applied to the Superion Court for a writ of
habeas corpus, but it was refused. The defendand is held for manslaughter, but his
