The . tirst application or permission te
carry on hydraulic mining under the provirions of the Caminetti bill came before the
Debris Commission of California in San
Francisco on Tuesday afternoon, The application was from Robert M. Mooer and James
C, Boyd, who have leaded the Kelly Hill
Gold Gravel mine, which is located seventeen miles northest of Chico,
The meeting was for the purpose of hearing any objectors who might appear to
oppose the granting of the permission applied
for, and as none appeared. the application
was taken uhder advisement and will be
granted, the Commission Say.
Next Monday the cominission will meet te
listen to protests against the Opening of the
old Omega mine in Nevada county. The
Omega mine is one the largest hydraulic
mines in this county, and it has more than
larger" mines in Operation, employing a
greater number of men, than at any time
during the past twelve years. In converga—
tion with a nnmber of prominent citizens
the fact was elicted that an era of prosperity
is anticipated such as has never before been
experienced in Nevada City. One old
pioneer facetiously remarked, “‘We have
steod by the old town through prosperity
and adversity, through storm and sunshine;
we have advocated her claims as a mining
center for many years and we-have never
tied in well doing. We Lelieve in the
survival of the fitte t,’ we have never lst
confidence in the ultimate success of the
city of our adoption, and today the expecta.
tions uf the sanguine are being realized.
These sentiments are indicative ef the {eeling pessessed Ly all the old residents rela~
tive to the future of our sister city,
The residents of the county seat are julilant over the resumption ofhydraulic mining, for a8 & matter of course that town will
be the center of supply for the hydraulic
wegions, and already their imaginations are
vivid @neugh to perceive large frieght wagons
leaving the city loaded down with Provisions
for the mines as in “ye olden time.”
While enjoying the

seeested by our popular and classical young
‘Assemblyman, Richard I. Thomias, After
a few fraternal greetings and complimentary
exchanges our eonversatien drifted te the
wifes of hydraulic in the upper part of the
county. In speaking of the future of the
San Juan Ridge, Mr, Thonias‘drew a picture
so graphic and real, couched in language sa
choice aud eloquent, that the reporter became so enchanted as to almost forget the
subject ef conversation. ‘Our young Assemblyman is thoroughly conversant With the
system of hydraulicking and is \veryons
thusiastic when discussing the
Prospects of that industry. Ty substance
he said: The miners of the Ban Tuam. ridge
are jubilant and justly so, Not for over
tem years has the horizon been so bright and
clear to them and they consider the future
of hydraulic mining very prepitious, indeed,
Preparations are being made to resume thia
system of mining on a scale in keeping with.
the importance and magnitude of the mines
for whose benefits the dams are being constructed.
~Do.you think Mr, Thomas, that restraining dams can be built that will prevent the debris from going iito the river?”

plied. “And not enly do I think so, byt
the majority ef the civil engineers of the
State who are acquainted with the hydraulic
mines. and the rivers adjacent thereto,
express the same opinion. It is a folly te
speak of restraiing dams that will net restrain in the way that the people of the valley do. It has heen proved beyond dispute
that dams can be constructed so as to prevent
any debris from proceeding inte the river,
and any statement to the contrary shows the
ignorance of the valley people of the subject
of which they attempt to discuss,”
‘How much do° you suppose Nevada
county has lost in her annual revenue
through the suppression ef hydraulic min.
ing?” “Tt is very difficult to give an accurate
estimate of the amount: of gold produced,
because many of the small claims do not
keep a record of their yearly productions.
But speaking approximately I should think
the loss sustained is somewhere from three
tofour millien dollars annually, This yeu
will perceive is a heavy loss to a simple
county and if our revenue was increased to
that amount there would be a great increase
in our presperity. Why, just think of it,
our assessment roll fell off one-half during
the first year after hydraulicking was prohibited. * This fact alone will convince the
most ebdurate of the value of this industry.
We need ‘this money; we must have it,
Look at the depression in tinancial and com.
mercial circles. A great part of the panic
might have been averted if the hydraulic
mines had continued their operations uninterrupted. Very near $120,000,000 have
been lost to the currency of the world
through the suppressien of these mines, a
far greater amount than the Treasury reserve
of the United States. In the San Juan
Ridge we have one of the best localities in
the State of California. We have quartz
mines, is =a shortly you will witness
& great boom "fi mining in that part of the
county. When everybody will he ‘jolly
