Jey Hartman There is not a habitable building for rent within or without the corporate limits of Nevada City. A bar of gold was brought up from the Providence mine yesterday that must have weighed forty or fifty peunds. There is not a better field for prospectors in the State than right in and around Nevada City. : The electric railroad is going to be built between Nevada City and Marysville. It is.as dead a shot as two and two make four. ‘It beats the devil,” said one of our mer— chants to the reporter, ‘‘how business has picked.up during the past few weeks.” Oak wood is selling at $5.50 per cord. That is a low rate when one stops to consider the long distance it is hauled by teams. The pay days commence at the mines ‘today. The 5th, 10th and 15th of eacli month a great deal of coin is paid out by thé mining companies. zt The Transcrirr’s new press is the finest piece of machinery of the kind in Northern California. Come anil see it when it is in operation. There is a growing demand for land outside of the verporate limits ofthe town. Get in and buy.sqme while the prices are within yeur reach, There is only one vacant store in Nevada City, and that one has been applied for. It is believed that Ghar— will get away with the Mon— tana wonder. Have you made arrangements, to send not go about it. Let us-all joia in and make the Pavilion exhibits’a grand success. Another quartz mine which has not been worked in twenty-five years is to be started up by some gentlemen who have recently arrived here from Colorado. Last week seventeen persons ‘called at the TRANSCRIPT office to enquire it we Knew of a vacant house or furnished ‘rooms to rent. Out invariable response was ‘‘No ma’m,’’ ‘No sir.” We publish this fact to save others from calling. The mines at Willow Valley are looking fine, and there will be a boom there within afew months. The Federal Loau in, particular is looking grand. Many good dividends are in sight in that mine. There are more prospectors in and around this township nuw than ever known before. There are hundreds of acres of gravel and been teuched by the miner’s pick: A suspicious looking character has been camping in the woods below the Providence mine for a day or two, It was thought at first to be Fredericks, but parties on seeing the picture say it does not look anything like the stranger. Col. E. B, Boust, who ran a newspaper at Dutch Flat in the early days, died at Fresno Thursday night. He was well-known.by a number of old-timers of this city. He was once Sheriff of Placer county. The Trustees of Lincoln School District, Placer county, appointed the following teachers: A. M. Powers of Nevada county, principal; Misses Lizzie Fleming and Mary Wastier of Lincoln, and Lillie Sparks of Oakland, assistants. It is almost a fact that the City Trustees at the meeting next month will require property holders in the business part of the town to have concrete walks laid down instead of wooden planks. Won't the city present a beautiful appearance then? The wooden walks are a nuisance—that’s what the ladies say. ; Real estate is beginning to be held at very stiff rates. One gentleman informed the reporter teday that he had a piece of property he had beon trying to sell for the past ten years, and no one would buy even at the low figure he offered it. ‘‘Now,” he said, *‘I have had a half a dozen offers at an advanced rate over that which I have asked, but I know I would be a fool to sell it now.” He is going to keep it for a big ——— 980+ = Methodist Church. If. nee.. ee That Is Why the Sunset Telephone Comp:ny Have Not Completed Their Lines. The ‘franscrirt has had several growls at the Sunset Telephone and Telegraph Company for not connecting us with the general line of the State and giving us the local exchanges. John Lawrence, Esq., General Superintendent and Vice President of the company, called upon the Transcairr yesterday and gave the whys and wherefores the connections had-not been made. He stated that the company had _pesitive assurances that their bonds would all be taken up on the first of July, but on account of the stringency of the money market they had been unable to dispose of them. Until they can do so, nearly all the work they had laid out in the State would have to be suspended, but he states positively that just as soon as they are enabled to obtain money Nevada City will be cennected with the inain line of the State. He thinks the company will-be able to put: in the local exchanges within a month, and connect us with the Marysville, Sacramento, San Francisco and Los Angeles line within two months. ; Mr. Lawrence thought that perhaps some of the capitalists in this county might be induced to invest about $7,000 in the compiuy’s bonds, which bear interest at the rate of six per cent per annum, but found that the average speculator or money lender received from one te two per cent a month on his money, . When completed the Sunset ‘Telephone Company will have the largest telephone line in-the United States. At present the line extends fron San Bernarnino to Tehama county, Lines are being constructed in Oregon and Washington to connect with the California lines, It is proposed to extend the system as far as Wardner, Idaho, = PSL Ir you want to enjoy your meals strengthen your digestion with Simmons liver Regulator, : Aree oS es Mrs. 'T. 8, Hawkins, Chattanooga, Tenn., says: ‘“Shiloh’s—Vitalizr “SAVED MY LIFE.’ Iconsider it the best-remedy fora sete actcy SAE -~-f debilitated system Lever used.” FPor--Dye-} ~Make a note of the fact that if you dont} pepsia, Liver or Kidney trouble it excels. Eee Barnum Power, who feturned from Truckee yesterday, informs us that while in that town he saw the largest aud prettiest collection of butterflies, in a cabinet, that he had ever seen. It was the property of Hon. C. F. MeGlashan, who has been many years making the collection, which is probably the finest in the State, including @ specimen of every-kind of buttertly, from the tiniest to the largest. They are so arranged in the cabinet that the whole presents a very beautiful appearance. » Mr. Power is of the opinion that the managers of pF tongs should procure this display of butterflies to exhibit at the coming Fair at Grass Valley, as it would be worth 25 cents to see that alene. We presume the Fair Directors, now their attention has been called to it, will make arrangements to secure it.
