Mine.
The second annual report of the Alaska
Treadwell Gold Mining Co., for the year
of $361,980 16 was earned during the
ear. The expenses during the year were
ower than any year before, as also was
the yield per ton. In spite of this reduced yield, the profit earned for the year
has been excceded only once in the-his
tory of the mine. H.C. Perkins( formerly
of North Bloomfield, Cal.), the consulting
engineer and late manager of the company,
says that there is 1,20 ,000 tons of ore
in sight in the first and second levels.
During the sinking of a drift below the
first level 226 assays were made, giving
an average of $4 59 per. ton, while the
assays of ore in No2 level average $4 21.
This leads Mr. Perkins to believe that
the ore in seound leveF will prove to beas

WATCHING THE MINERS.
Two Hydraulic Detectives Who Were Not
Very Successful.
Robert T. Devlin, special attorney for
Sacramento county in the prosecution ot
hydraulic miners, addressed the Board
of Supervisors of that @eounty on Thursday last in reference to Watchman Hagle
and Elder, who have recently been spying around Gold Run. The men had
returned and made their report. The report was turned over to the Supervisors.
It wassigned by J. A. Elder, and was as
follows:
* Pursuant to your request, John Hagle
ity for the purpose of seeing that the injunction sued out by the county againat
hydraulic miners were enforced, ‘f he
mornirg after our arrival we discovered
a number of Chinamen working at picking out a trench where dirt had been
washed off, but, in endeavoring to reach
them, they fled. We did not discover
that they were using manitors, At Gold
Kun there is constantly running a large
quantity of water, which can be nsed for
mining purposes duriig the whole of the
year. We stopped at the hotel at Gold
‘ua, and after we had been there about
five or six days the proprietor informed
us that he could not keep us any longe ,
and we were compelled to move oir
quarters elsewhere. During the time
that we were on the ground no hydraulic
mining was carried on. We were vonstantly employed during the tire we
were there watching the country, aud
were supplied by Mr. Devlia with in.
junctions to serve on anyone we caught
miming, but during our visit the mines
were deserted. What occurred after we
left we do not know. We were employed
in all nine days,”

THE AYDRAULC BILL. .
What the San Francisco Chronicle’ flas to
A dispatch from Washington says that
it is promised that the hydraulic mining
bill will be favorably reported to the senate and that the Mining Committee will
be unanimous for it. ‘There will be a few
amendments which.will tend to simplify
the bili and render the carrying out of its
provisions more easy, but which will not
change its scope.
are proposed they will uefeat the bill altogether. It passed the House only under party pressure and as a scheme to assist
the Demovratic candidate for Congress in
the Second district of this State, and if
the Senate amends the bill the House
may seize upon thai asa pretaxt to defeat it altoyether.
No one has ever yet explained why the
Senator from Culifornia. has apparently
taken so little interest in a bill which is of
such importance to the prosperity of California. The dispatch referred to suggests
much interest in the bill since they have
discovered that the Republicans of California thought it of sutticient importance
to give ita place in the State platforin,
but that oug! t not to apply to the Republican Senator from California, who sure.y
We are fearful that if any amendments . .
