Henry Richards, superintendent of the Centennial drift mine on the Washington ridge, killed a 400 pound grizzly bear Wednesday at u point half way between the Centra! House andthe mine. He was meandering along towards the mine when bruin appeared in the road but.a few yards away. The instant the animal discovered him it headed for him with a vicious snarl, Fortunately he had his rifle along and preserved his: coolness. He fired with deadly effect, the ball striking brnin in the neck. There have been several grizzlies haunting that locality for two months past, and although the people thereabout have tried hard to put a quietue ofi'them they have till now proved too wary to be caught.’ The Champion Driver. Harry Wyrick drove the Downie. fourteen-horse team and three freight wagons for Dan Cole, and his winter job is staging from Camptonville to Downieville. He has the reputation of being the coast champion as a single-line driver of fourteen horses. He never swears or yells at his horses, but with the long rein and in alow tonle of voice manages them ase skillfully as the ordinary experienced horsenian does one animal. “Texas” Clarke, the Marysville freighter, is an expert at the busiress, but W3e rick is ‘said beat him as far as he beats ordinary teamaters. ‘Texas’ had a bad tip over on Goodyear Grade the other day, but that was because the horses were too tired from a long and hard pull to obey the words of command, and was not through any fault of ‘‘Texas.” Denth of Cel.
