Now comes‘advice from parents in the future. Some parents might give their children gor d advice in business, and they might be successful; while other parents avho love their children Well and may advise them, but the advice may not prove satisfactory, and the children may make mistakes. So everything is like a dream in this world, and things which are meant for good turn out wrong. We will say to the people of * Nevada and surrounding counties that these few remarks are made by L. Hyman himself. My age is 37 years, and my Dbéfiness is that of a merchant. I was raised in Russ-Poland; and the edugation which was given children there At that time was not meuch, as there were no public schools in those days, Every poor Israelite then had to hire a private teacher to instruct his children, and had to pay for it -himalf. Tue intentions of the rich Israclite in those days was to give his son a good education, that he might become a Rabbi But with me it was different, as my father was poor, and I did not learn enough Bible lore to become a Rabbi, and #0 my parents had to apprentice me to a tailor, and I learned that trade, I served an apprenticeship of five yoars, and worked just for my board. When the wor broks out between Germany and France I was advised to go to Franoe, was but fourteen years of age at that time. When I arrived at Hamburg 1 was told that on account of the war L could not reach Paris, and . had to take the steamer to Greensburg, thence to London. IT had never before seen a steamer, and did not know what it was. When I arrived at Greensburg and took the train I was surprised again, and when I arrived in London, the bigyest city in the world, I was most surprised to find I could’ net talk the language, and I was calléd a greenhorn, knew what green racantin GerHowever, . started in to work at my trade, tailoring, and worked for five shillings a week in London. I started out without any education or schooling to learit the English language, which I did, man, and inside of one year . was earning £) From there . cam: to New York, worked steadily at my trade, and saved up money. per week as a tailor, I came out to California in °75, and after working for so many years L came to the conclusion that TL would like to quit tailoring and gx { went into the wholesale; into business. A business of manufacturing ruchings for ladies’ wear, with a partner who was a shoemaker by trade, good, hut avither of us business and the Chinese competition was strong, and soon went broke, and I went back to tailoring and.my partner to shoemaking. This Was not very successful either, but 1 wasnt discouraged. Having tried everything else, I concluded to marry in hopes Our courage was understood the that it would change my'luck. So I got married in Rocklin, Placer county, T then opened a store in Jackson, Ama dor county, where my oldest child was Then I took a trip, to Nevads City, and I liked the town, I epened a store in Jacka’s place, where James Monro now keeps a butcher shop. 1 born. opened a small tailor shop, amd kep!
