Look Out for Burglass,
It is very evident that our town is in,
fested with a number of tough characters
just now, and they have already begun to
show their bands. A few nights ago the
‘Tea Store was broken into; but fortunately nothing was stolen, the burglars not
finding any coin or other valnables, Last
night an attempt was to rob the variety
store kept by Charles Gray on Commercial stiteet. A pane of glass was removed
from the door and the lock unfastened.
Gray sleeps in-a room back of the store
and was awakened by the barking of his. ee
dog. He got up and went into the store
just in time to hear the would-be robbers
running away. Now that the City Tru.tees have decided to dispense with a
nightwatchman it is quite probable that
burglars and footpads will reap a harvest.

summoned as witnesses in the case of

They did not expect the prisoner to plead
guilty’ and therefore expected to reach
Auburn in time. The Judge.ordered that
their fees as witnesses be forfeited on account of their not making their appearance in Court at the proper hour.
The horse thief Westcn was sentenced
to a term of eighteen months at the Folsom prison by Judge Prewett at 1:30 last
Monday. The prisoner at first entered a
plea of not guilty and afterwards withdrew it and substituted the plea of guilty.
This action no doubt saved the prisone
