A few nights ago the ‘Tea Store was broken into; but fortunately nothing was stolen, the burglars not finding any coin or other valnables, Last night an attempt was to rob the variety store kept by Charles Gray on Commercial stiteet. A pane of glass was removed from the door and the lock unfastened. Gray sleeps in-a room back of the store and was awakened by the barking of his. ee dog. He got up and went into the store just in time to hear the would-be robbers running away. Stephen Wasley was arrested this morning by Constable Scott for disturbing the peace, on complaint of Robert Simmons. He will be tried before Justice Mulloy Wednesday afternoon. Wasley was discharged from the county jail on Monday last, having completed a term of sixty days for malicious mischief, Undertaking. Leech, of Grass Valley, formerly a resident of Placer county, spent last Monday and Tuesday in Anburn, Mr, Leech appeared in Court Monday as one of the creditors of O, W. Hollenbeck. A. A. Mr. Ferguson is one of the pioseers ot Placer county and while here’ recalled the fact that he mined in the ravine north of the Putnain House in 1849. Mrs. J. M. Harper the Democrat Treasurer ‘elect, Mrs. Jacobs is a staunch Democrat and and will make an efficieut deputy as she is a lady who possesses marked ability. We are pleased to state that her alppointment has given the best of satisfaction among the Democrats, ’ Henry Lane, of Nevada City, and Samuel Avery, of Grass Valley, who were summoned as witnesses in the case of People ‘vs. Weston, through ‘some inadvertance did not reach Auburn at 10 o'clock Monday, the time set for trail. They did not expect the prisoner to plead guilty’ and therefore expected to reach Auburn in time. The Judge.ordered that their fees as witnesses be forfeited on account of their not making their appearance in Court at the proper hour. The horse thief Westcn was sentenced to a term of eighteen months at the Folsom prison by Judge Prewett at 1:30 last Monday. The prisoner at first entered a plea of not guilty and afterwards withdrew it and substituted the plea of guilty. This action no doubt saved the prisone from ‘receiving a much heavier sentence.
