Is Alum Poisonous, [Hall's Journal of Health. ~* “This question has caused a good deal, of discussion. Alum is used by many bakers to whiten their biead, enabling tiem to use an inferior flour. It is most extensively employed asacheap substitute for.creain of tartar in the manufacture of baking powders. Its use has not been considered immediately dangerous, ailthough if continued it induces dyspepsia and obstinate constipation: But the fact that many cases of poisoning have occurred from the use of alum, puts thequestion in a more serious aspect, and prudent people will exercise caution in the selection of baking powders.” ' Under what conditions then, does this substance—formerly used only for mechanical or medicinal purposes—become poisonous? They are certainly obscure, and at present we can only surmise what they may be. We suspect that the cause exists in the individual poisoned; some peculiarity ef the constitution producing a morbid change in the secretions of the stomach, withwhich the alum combines and forms an active poison ; or the secretions may be healthy-yut in unusual proportions, and that these less or greater proportions in combination with the alum constitute a poison.” “For cxample, two parts of mercury and two parts of chloriue form calomel, which is not poisonous, but change the proportions to one part mercury and two parts ef chlorine, and we get corrosive sublimate, which is a deadly poison.” “Then again we know nothing of the constitutional peculiarities. “Why is it that one person can eat all kinds of green fruits and vegetables with impunity, while the same course might cost another individual his life. One person can bundle poison ivy and sumac without being in the least affected; another is puisuned if he approaches to within ten feet’of them. Out of a family residing in a malarial district, some of the members will suffer half the year with fever and ague, while the others will enjoy excellent health during the entire year. Foods that are wholesome to some persons are actually poisonous to others, This is especially true of some kinds of,fish. There is no safety in taking alum into the stomach, as it is shown to be always injurious, and often dangerous,” * * The Scientific American published in a recent number alist of alum and ammonia baking powders, which is of great value at this time, Following is a condensed list compiled from official reports: Powders marked with a star seem to have a general sale, as they are mentioned in at. least two of the official reports: “ATLANTIC & PACIFIC. *ROYAL. Floyd, youngest brother to Wm. and Joseph Floyd of this city, and who left about five years ago after having worked in various mines hereabout, was killed on the 29th ultimo by the Chinese cvok at the Rescue Mining Company’s boarding house at Globe City,Arizona, Fred Tellam, formerly of this city, attended the coroner's inquest, and he sends to I. J. Rolfe the following account of the affair: The Chinamar had two tame quails which were stolen; and he accused Floyd of taking them. . That day Floyd was about to quit the mine for another camp, and he sent a friend to the Chinaman to get twenty-five or fifty cents’ worth of bread to-take along. The Chinaman replied that he would not sell the bread and applied an opprobrious epithet to Floyd. When the message was delivered to the latter he quit his cabin and went to the boarding house where the cook was peeling potatoes with a shar p butcher knife. They had some words when Floyd struck the Chinaman several times in the back of the head, ~The lat ter then stabbed Floyd about five inches above the knee, cutting a main artery. A man dnd his wife and children were presext, and the woman seeing a pistol in Floyd’s hand became so alarmed that her hushand took her outof the building, then summoned the superintendent and foreman. When the latter arrived they found Floyd lying ina pool of blood. He was nearly dead and his pistol was at his side, none of the chambers being discharged. The Chinaman was coolly working away on the potatoes. Floyd died shortly afterward, ©Tae Chinaman was held over to answer before the Grand Jury.
