Ladies ‘Traveling Alone.
96 Sd
A lady who has traveled many
thousand miles without escort suggests
these don’ts forthe benefit of other
ladies who contemplate going abroad
alone:
Don’t dress loudly.
Don’t make any acquaintances on
; ae car or soe. :
in’ sit alone in public lors,
Better. b far stay in your pag nis
and read than make yourself an object
of comment,
2
_Make up your mind to be courteous
on sgh but reserved, and all men
1 be like Chevalier Bayards to you,
and all women will give you what you
demand—respect. :
Another lady who has not traveled
much, but who has the reputation of
being one of the best housekeepers in
Nevada City, suggests these :idditional
don’ts: :
Don’t fail-to use Enameline on your
stoves if yon want them. to look like
new.
Don’t commit the mistake of making
mince pies out of anything but. New
England condensed mince meat.
Don’t neglect to-buy these and all
other household supplies of George ©
Gaylora ifyou want to get the best
results for thé least money. :
Hs Wanted #resh Air.
The San Francisco Call of Tuesday
tells this: Dan.Cote, who wanted to
sit as a member of the State Board of
Equalization, but who failed because
the other fellow got more votes, is in
the city. He came down from Eureka with George Knight, and the latter
is now laughing at his expense.
George says that he strolled on ‘he
deck after dinner and found Dan: loaning over thé rail intent on studying
the color of the sea. Atleast he was
gazing steadfastly into the bosom of
the deep, and at times an almost imperceptible shudder could be seen to
steal over his frame. ‘
George took compassion on: him, and
said in his most cheerful tone:
“Brace ur, Dannie, my boy; you’l] be
all rigiit in a few minutes.”
“‘l’m not sick, George,”’ came the
feeble reply, ‘‘but I’ve eaten too much
dinner, and fF find it a relief :o get out
I'm doing now.’’
A Pienéer’s sad Fate.
Joshua, better known az ‘Jerry’
Norris, who was found deid in his
cabin at Lowell Hill last Saturday
morning, was one of the earliest settlers'in that part of the county. He
sailed from Boston, Mass., in May,
1849, and arrived at San Francisco on
October 30 of the same year. He
was a kind, honorable and true-hearted man, and although a resident of
Lowell Hill for so many years had
not oneenemy. He had his faults,
as-allhumans have, bat he left no unpaid bills behinds him.
Among other old pioneers left at
Lowell Hill are F, T. Maguire, James
Hill, N.B. Shepard and several others, but they. ure gradually lessening

THIRTY YEARS’ PRACTIOCR
A Letter from an Eminent Physician.
Mr. Eprror: At the risk of indorsing a
proprietary: preparation, { have a few words
in favor.of a new iaxative principle. But
first, how I came to discover it. A patient
asked sbout taking Joy’s Vegetable Sarsa
Parilie.As sarsaparillas usually contein
mercury or iodides I objected, and asked for
the formula, which finding purely vegetable,
O. M. Enslow, a civil engineer, says
inthe Mining and Scieatific Press:
At Cherokee Flat, Butte county, where
is located the property of the Cherokee
Hydraulic Mining Company, can be
seen what is called in mining phraseology a‘‘griazly,” it being simply a
contrivance fur seggregatirg the materials on a limited scale, as they
come direct from the mine, and consists principally of long iron bars lving
at the end of the first section of the
flume as it emerges from the tunnel,
Enough space is left between the bars
for the water and finer pebbles and
Sands to pass through, but the coarse
bowlders are shot out-the end of the
bars when they roll down into Sawmill
ravine aad there remain per:aanently.
The water and pebbles after pissing
the grizzly are caught up by a flume
and carried down a mile or so and
tben dumped into the head of Dry
creek. Here the gravel, sand, etc.,
spread out to nearly one-hali mile in
width—the finer particles being carried along Dry creek fora couple of
miles to a dam located in udmirable
place for storage, but not properly kept
up tostop as much debris as it should
and from the dam thé water and tailings are carried in a canal 25 or 30
miles leng to the lowlands in Sutter
county. The canal is 500 or 600 feet
in width, with levees aud sub-levees
six or eight feet above tlie general surface of the low flat lands bordering
either side of Dry creek.
The company saw early the trouble
that the tailings from the mine was
iable to make, so they bought the
land along the line of the canal. It
would probably have been better if they
had in the first place avoided the line
of Dry Creek slough and kept aaway
with the canal line on higher ground,
as it is now known that what materials
the water contains will move readily
in @ canal eight or ten feet wide with a
grade from five to eight feet to the
mile. They would not in this case be
troubled with the floodwaters uf Dry
creek and the great expense of keeping
up the levee lines. The princip.l point
to be learned here is the ease with
which the finer particles from the
mine can be handled. with « small
canal, Whileiu the present line the
weeds und willows grow so thrifty in
cept from the mine, that it affords an
obstruction and lodgment for the
debris—the facts in this case being
ocular demonstrations of points I wish
tomake use of. All hydraulic mines
are not similarly situated, but modifications of .the general plan below
mentioned would have to be made to
suit particular cases. —
Most of the main hydraulic mines,
of which nearly-all are enjoined from
working, are high up in the ‘mountains. If, at the-end--of their matu
flame, they should continue their
flume-grade until the vertical hight of
the flume should be 50 to 100 feet
above the ravine orcreek channels,
into which most all mines tail, then
“grizzly”? off all the rocks and gravels,
as far as practicable, and which forms
the largest proportion of the debris,
and let it dump—the water, sands and
gravel being canght in a flume and
carried to some convenient point,
where a reservoir of moderate dimensions could be constructed, when the
second precipitation would be made of
everything except the very finest:
particles and ofleast specific gravity.

The Stockton Republican asks : Do
those Democratic papers, like the San
Francisco Alta and Stockton Mail, that
are demanding that California adopt
the ‘‘Australian ballot” stop to think
that the United States of America is
bigger than'aa English penal colony?
Do they know that it is not necessary for California to adapt its elective
system to the methods of “Siduey
ducks?”
There are some faults in the American franchise system, but it is not necessarv to go to Australia. to diecover
the means of correction.
There are some good, level-headed,
free American citizens in California,
who, as members of the Legislature,
can attempt to correct the franchise
evils without going to a British corral
to learn how te do it.
The very name ‘Australian ballot,”
is enough to kill the thing in a country that is under a Republican form
of government,
What is Australia? Is it a republit? *
Is it an independent government?
It is merely a dependency of England—an autonomy; and were its ba!lot system as pure as the driven snow
in its methods, the fact that the voice
of the voter that casts the ballot is
choked by the shadow of monarchy,
is enough to prevent the consideration
‘of an American commonwealth following the example.Yet American Democratic newspapers want tosend us to an English autonomy to teach Americans how to
vote.
Oh, Democracy, how many sins
thon committeth thyself in-thine own
misname!

Says the Grass Valley Union: Drift
gravel ‘mining at Smartevi,le and
vicinity is being~conducted with excellent results now. The Excelsior
Company’s claim at Mooney Flat is
rich, and is paying handsomely all
thetime. The New Blue Point ground
(Campbell’s) on the Smartsville side
of the ridge is also yielding pay gravel
regularly. The more,recent workings
on these imines, go to disprove the
theory as to the course of the gravel
channel that was formerly entertdined by the hydraulic niiners, as it is
now found that the lead at a certain
point deflects from the north to the
south rim rock, and in consequence
the lead is lengtheried considerably,
and it is.estimated that there are yet
several milesofthe channel that has
been untouched, and from the yield
that is now. beiag made on the claima
abeve mentioned that ther? is an extensive body of ground between that
must yield an immense amount of
gold. The New Blue Point claim
covers three-fourths of a mile of this
channel, aad the Excelsior Company
the remainder, being a consolidaion
ofa number of old claims. If hydraulicking could be continued these
Claims, from their prospects, would
yield from $5000 to $6000 a,day, but
as drifting ground it is believed the
channel will pay the whole distance.
Smarteville bus a good mining future
yet.
