Just above the town of Dutch Flat, on the left bank of Bear River, one monitor was used last winter washing bedrock, but would occasionally’ be turned near enough to the bank to wash off a small slice of the top bank. SOUTH YUBA RIVER. i The Kate Hayes mine is located on the right bank, near the town of French Corral, and: has two monitors (only one of which is operated at a time), which are operated on a bank about;fifty or sixty feet in perpendic height. These machines use abg inches of water, under a vertical ssureof about. 250 feet. These operations are carried on behind a log and brush dam, which, ‘when first constructed and for a short time thereafter,. held back from the river about all the debris, but now the dam is so full that avast amount of sand.and..finer..material.tinds.its.way. through it and thence into the river. The claim has water'the year around and works continuously. ; Hustler’s mine is situated on ‘the right bank of South Shady Creek, tributary of South Yuba River, and has one monitor, which uses abuut 350 inches of water under a vertical pressure of about 200, behind a restraining dam, which holds back the debris except when the floodgate of said dam is opened, which has been the case on one or two occasions. Columbia Hill mines, commonly known as the Eureka’ Lake Consolidated, has two monitors, éach of Which uses about 500 or 600 inches of water under a vertical pressure of about 130 feet. These mines are located immediately south and west of the town of Columbia Hill. The one west of the town has a goud settling pool, and has not been dumping material “gute the Middte-Yuta-River-~The-south— one ig operated behind a log dam, which is-about full, and a great quantity of pipe clay and sand escapes into Spring Creek, # tributary of South Yuba River. The banks of these mines are about thirty-five and sixty feet respectively. Robison and Frandy’s mune is located on the head of Spring Creek, a tributary ot the South Yuba River. This claim has one monitor, which uses 250 inches of water under a vertical pressure of 100feet. This ciaim keeps up a restraining dam which holds back the debris, allowing the water to go off slightly muddy. The Place claim is located at or near the town of Omega, on the left bank of the South Yuba River, and has two monitors, which use about 500 infthes each under a pressure of about 200 feet. The bank of the claim is about eighty feet in perpendicular height. This clai.o keeps up a restraining dam, but the water frequently goes out very muddy. This mine has four monitors, of which only one is used at a time, with a capacity of about 600 inches under a vertical pressure of 250 feet. The bank has a perpendicular height of about 100 feet. Hardscrabble is located on the right bank of Canyon Creek, a tributary of the North Yuba River, about two and a half miles above the village of Scales. This claim has two monitors, with a capacity of 300 or 350 inches each under a vertical pressure of about 100 feet. The bank has a perpendicular height of about 30 feet.
