Of these 170 are dailies. “The oldes: is the Gazette de Genes, established in 1797. In Austria-Hungary there are 1,200 journals, of which 150 are circulated seven. times.each week. Of the 850 papers published in Spain one-third are ‘periodical: The first specimens-of the Spanish gazettes were peddied about by the blind. They appeared at indifferent periods, and often assumed the form of romances. Russia publishes but 800 journals, -200 of which appear at St Petersburg and 75 at Moscow. An infinite number of languages are represented in the Rusgian press. In Greeée journals are proportionally numerous, every little market place having one. Athens publishes 54, all daily. In Switzerland there are 450 journals, and Belgium and Holland furnisb nearly an equal: number. In Sweden, Norway and Portugal journalism is but little cultivated. In Turkey the journalistic movement is quite active. In Asia are found no less than’ 3; 000 periodical publications. Most of of them appear in Japan and the English Indies. China is not so well supplied, bav‘ing but ‘the King-Pau—the official journal of Pekin, which issues three editions aday on as many colors of paper—one journalat Shanghai, and another at Corea. In Beloochistam and Afghanistan there are no papers; but as an offeet there are six in Persia. As regards the press Africa is disinherited. It possesses but 200 journals, 30 of which are published in Egypt, and the rest in the European colonAs might be supposed, America comes in for a large share of the world’s publications. In the United States alone there are 12,500, of which over 1,000 are dailies. The first American newspaper appeared at Boston in 1704, under the name of the Boston News. Although but slightly developed up to 1800, an epoch at which there were but 200 journals, fhe press of the United States has made remarkable progress since the beginning of this esntury. In fact, in 1840 there were 1,630 journals enumerated, in 1880 4,000. It will be seen that since then the figures have. been more than tripled. In Canadathere are 700 journals. Aside from Mexico and in Brazil,where * a number of journals are published, it only remainsto-cite the Argentine Republic, the press of which is represented by 60 publications. But four papers ean be found in Oceanica. Australia has 700. The Sandwich Islands have eight. Over half the papers printed appear in English. Of American journals 150 are edited and published by negroes. The oldest of these, the Elevator, was started eighteen years ago.
