The Monkey Stole the Angel’s Wings.
The first week of the circts closed with
an immense audience, whose liberal~applause stimulated the performers to surpass their usual excellence.
The audience was treated to an estes:
ly new version of the ‘Dawn of Christianity,” the brilliant finale of the ‘‘Fall
of Rome,” when Jocko, the dogfuced
baboon, took an unexpected part. Jocko
njoys considerable freedom, and during
she performance he slipped unnoticed
from his perch in the dressing room and
emerged from a door-in the heathen temple into tbe glare of the lime lights while
Christianity was dawning.
Jocko recognized his dear friend Mme.
Bumond posing as an angel with glisteriing wings, and in a mischievous spirit
16 Snatched the wings, then turned and
vings, and the rest of the angels, convalsed with laughter, fled into the inte‘ior city. The the spectators applauded
he race between the babeah “nie the
vingless angel until they disappeared
within the gates of Rome. Hereafter
Joclso will be obliged to confine his genius
‘o his own specialty, in which he is emnently successful.—Philadelphia Press.
An Indignant Justice.
Tustice Nichols, . of Independence, is

who proiised to be wedded ‘in his court
vecause they were married in Justice
Prewitv’s court. He claims it was a

On Tuesduy night, so Justice Nichols

the time drew near and the justice sat

he coming of the couple. He had filled
lie application and had it ready for the
ignature of the prospective groom. The
\ppointed time caine and passed, but the
‘ouple that he waited for never came.
Meantinre, in the office of Justice Prewt, the couple were quietly married.
hey received their certificate and haply returned home. The justice was,
vill waiting expectant when informed
‘hat the couple had already been married
wud returned hoine. _ He declared his inor dumage#and breach of coutract.
The justice is emphatic in his deteruination and says he will make it a test

Payday Comes After Eighteen Years.
Churles King, of Little Falls, has done
i Very commendable thing by paying
4.600 to the operators that worked in
e Suxony mill at the time. of the faili878, Quring a depression of the knit
goods trade. Mr, King was not obliged
so pay this money, but he always said
‘mount of capital. that would pay off the
wages due at the time of their unforturate failure he would meet all demands.
Jue hundred and _ three persons, ‘who
were working in the mill on the 4
suspension, have been made happy hy r&
seiving checks for their back wages) A
few of the old employees have moved
away and some are dead, The heirs of
deceased operatives -will be paid the
amount due them,—Utica (N. Y.) Herald and Globe. ;
The Heaviest Yoke of Steers.
In a freight train which passed
rough Hannibal on the St. Louis, Keokuk and Northwestern line from Burlington to St: Louis were the celebrated
Walker twin steers. These cattle were
istered at the Chicago exchange as
thé largest in the world. They were
raised in Jasper county, Mo., by Mr.
Walker. Mr. Walker values them very:
highly, and will not ship them over a
railroad unless the railroad insures them.
The railroad company had them insured
for $10,000. They are 6 years of age, 12
feet 6 inches long, 14 feet around the
chest or heart, 3 feet 2 inches across the
hips. Their aggregate weight is 8,040
pounds.—Cor. St. Louis Globe-Demo-.

The First Home of the Flag.
The little old building on Arch street,
above Second, where Betsey Ross made
the first flag of stars and stripes for the
United States army, is likely to be removed bodily and taken to’'Chicago for
exhibition at the ‘World’s fair, The
building is owned by Mrs. Amelia Mund,
and she has been asked to name a price
for the property, the. prospective purchaser being a:western gentleman. The
Pennsylvania. Historical: society. desires
to buy -the house and remove it tu the

would prefer that the old-honse ‘remain.

The Chinese make what the »y call ‘lie’
