eh ie iat Snr oo THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. — : BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. . . &. 8. CALKINS, — ¥. P. BROWN, EDITOR. BUSINESS MANAGER. WEDNESDAY EV’NG, DEC. 23, 1891. NN SAN FRANCISOO'S MAINSTAY. How the Gold Miners Have Contributed to Her Prosperity. Alf. Tregidgo, President of the Nevada County Miners’ Association, says: Less than twenty years ago San Fyancisco was a beoming city. Its income from outside sources was immense and its pregress apparently unrestrainable. Its income from the: mines of Nevada was great; from the mines of Galifornia some millions annually; from Oregon, China and Japan and Central American States every steamer brought fresh orders which kept her merchants busy attending to. Later on the Southern California and Arizona trade added to its financial greatness. ' In those days the suspension of an important branch of the mining industry— taking from the city somewhere about ten millions per annum—was not materially felt. But since that dire calamity fell upon the State, which drove the Travel miners from their homes and deprived them of their living, San Francisco‘ has likewise suffered. Utah has taken away considerable of the “Nevada trade, the Nothern Pacific has entirely removed the Oregon businsss, the Canadian Pacific people have put on line of steamers and British Columbia has become quite a competitor for the Chinese and Japanese trade, and it is more than probable that after the 1st of next January the coffee planters of the Central American Republics, rather than pay an income tax on their product to permit of its been landed in Sari Francisco, will seek some others market. In the meantime San Francisce has grewn to a magnificent city, having been made great by many of its inhabitants who had accumulated riches from the output of the mines, loosing the strings of their purses and building it up until it has become the Pacific metropolis of today. It is a city of grand structures and beautiful homes, having extended its boundaries and increased its population without protecting its income or, developing its. resources. Isit to be wondered at, then, “that'the Examiner advocates the judi ious resumption of an industry that cannot but bring prosperity to the State at large and _ the city in particular? The completion of the Nicaragua Canal and the development of California’s mineral resources are the salvation of the State. The former. is a proposition of the future. The latter is the problem of the day. The commission of Governmental Engineers in their report recommended Congress to make an appropriation whereby the debris, out of which three or four hundred millons in gold can be extracted, could: be prop~erly taken care of by expending less than one and one half millions. . Where can the Government do better with a little of its money that is today lying idle in the Treasury? This appropriation when nade will be a good thing fur the State and, besides having the money put into circulation in our midst, it will be spent in the construction of dams that are to protect the agriculturist and to enable the miner to place on the surface the gold that is to‘day known to exist in abundance, while it isa disgrace to the present avowed state of so-called civilization to permit it to remain buried and not an effort be made to uncover it, which can be accomplished to the beneiit, of all and to the injury of none. : San Franciseo will be the grand center and reap all the benefit and we ask its citizens to render us their assistance in our struggle for the supremacy and sustainment of the Pacific Coast metropolis, of which all Californians are proud. = oun 4 e SUMMONS.
