A Word About Style.
Fine clothing does not make the man,
him the respect of his fellow-citizens if
he does not overdo it. A stylish hat, a
neat pair of gloves and 9 nobby necktie
will give the wearer an appearance of
being well dressed even though his
boots be out at the toes, his elbows
through and his pauts frayed around the
bottom. Speaking of style, Charles
Grimes has the latest and most approved in everything that the sterner
pex wears, and there is scarcely a thing
in his store that would not make an acceptable gift for the coming Christinastide.

“Some of the papers in this part of the
State,” said C. E. Ayerte a Marysville.
Appeal representative, ‘are making the
very sad mistake of trying to create a lind
boom in the foothills of Yuba and Nevada
counties by reporting many things which
they haye surmised.
surmises I find that my mame is connected with these alleged gigantic transactions, and I can assure you that itis decidedly unpleasant, for the reason that I
always perform what I promise, and Iam
make anything in the line of a promise,
that either maa or community think 1
waa obligated to perform, y
‘In the first place it'has a very bad
effect on the general people to raise their
hopes, only to have them dropped with
such severity as to cause some one to be
hurt. A great many of my foothill
friends think that Iam either personally
desirous of acquiring their property--er,
that I have béeii commissoned to buy the
entire region. g F
‘In this they are in error. Parties
whoin I represent wanted about 50,000
acres of land in that vicinity providing I
could get it at certain figures and in such
location as to be able to pul it under a
system of irrigation. I thought I could
aud felts confident that on my own responsibility I went to bonding.
‘*Before I had secured one-half of the
acreage necessary it became known that
I wanted land ani the prices popped up
to unreasonable figures. ‘The result was
that I saw I could not get the land necessary, within the amount allowed, and I
had to stop. That which I_ had bonded
I became responsible for and in. several
instances, I can assure you, I would have
given a little something to have had
thém off of my hands.
“It was real amusing in two or three
cases, just after I had secured the bonds,
to witness the agony which some of the
owners went through at the thought of
haying parted with their realty at such a
low figure. They consilted attorneys to
see if the bonds could not be broken.
“This all changed when: they learned
that I was not so anxious about the mat‘ter, and their anxiety took another form
—they wanted to force me to take the
property. Ihave it, and it is decidedly
more than I want on my own account.
“No, I am quite positive that the parties who had commissioned me to act will
nut again offer me the money to execute
the plans Which I had formulated. It is
a bad thing for the county; for, had I
succeeded in acquiring the property
necessary, the irrigating ditches would
have been put in readiness and distributed over the laid so that at least one
hundred families could have been put on
it within the next year, Iam sorry for
the community, but feel for myself mores

My Name is “Santa Claus,”
chainp onship ofthe world -Myers-defeat--—TAYLOR'S ONE SPOON,
Tartar Powder Contains Alum and Ammonia;
____Dr. Price gives larger and_fuller_cans than. those
of any other Baking Powder manufacturer.
Above cut represents the comparative size of one pound can each
“Dr. Price’s,” Royal” and “Taylor's One Spoon.” These cans were
set side by side, then photographed down in exact proportions to
admit the plate in this space. Ask your grocer to set a one pound
can of any other brand alongside I lb. Dr, Price's Cream Baking
Powder, and observe the difference, as illustrated above.
Adultérated powders may usually be detected by their heavier
bulk, as shown by the emall cans, and these scantily filled, often
containing a circular to help fill out the cans. It is a singular fact
that many of the ammonia and alum baking powders are advertised
as “Absolutely Pure,” All official.examinations prove that. it would
be safe to reject all powders labeled absolutely pure,
The economy in using Dr. Price’s Cream Baking Powder does
not consist alone in the fact that much larger and fuller cans are
given, but Dr. Price's is a stronger, purer and more wholesome baking powder than any other known. Does better work, and goes
farther, hence more economical in every way.
What woman would use an ammonia or alum baking powder if
she. knew it? Such powders not only undermine the health, but
ammonia gives to the complexion a sallow and blotched appearaitce,
4
Dr. Price’s Cream Baking Powder is reported by all
authorities as free from ammonia, alum, lime, or any other
adulterant. The purity of this ideal powder has never been
questioned, :
