An Eye on His Woed.
A Broad street man was rather late
about ordering his winter’s wood, and
has just had arrive ten cords which is
piled up in the street alongside his
house. Several of his neighbors were
still later in ordering, and they not
only have no piles alongside their
houses, but-cannot find anybody who
will agree to put, any there, They
have burned up their chicken coops,
cellar doors, wood-boxes, ete., trying
to keep warm, and are now looking
for fresh sources of supply. They
have been offering the man with the
ten cords fabulous figures fora ‘jag’? of
his, but he is not on the speculate,
One of the woodless went to him
“Thursday morning and said:
“See here Charlie, I want to buy or
borrow half a cord of that wood of
yours,”’
“Tt’s out of the question,’ was the
reply; ‘‘there isn’t enough money in
town to hire me to take the chances,
of running out of fuel a winter like this,
and I certainly wouldn’t loan because
I know you couldn’t pay me back before next summer.
‘Very. well sir,” said the applicant
grimly, “I give you notice that I can’t
get along without some of that wood;
and I propose to have it if I am compelled to steal it. :
Charles has borrowed a double-barreled shotgun and proposes tosit up
nights with his pile’ till the sawyer
gets it under lock and key.
He thinks that during the daytime
‘he ¢an trust to the honor and the fear
-of detection—more especially the latter—of his covetous and woodless fellow citizens.
Chas. D. Brown Killed.
Charles D, Brown, assistant yard
master at Sacramento for the Central
Pacific Ruilroad Company,’ was in
stantly killed at ten o’clock Christmas
morning while engaged in the performance of his duties, The yard
locomotive was passing him at a rapid
speed when he attempted to mount
the foot-board infront. He made a
misstep or slipped and fell beneath
the wheels, He was shockingly cut
up and of course met with instant
death. The funeral willtake place in
Sacramento at ten o’clock Friday
morning. The deceased was aged 30
years anda most popular and promising young man. Two years and a
half ago he married Miss Mary O’Donnell of this city, and his wife and’ a
five-thonths old child survive him.
His mother and sister reside at Colfax.
Mrs, Cal. R. Clarke and John O’Donnell, sister and brother to Mrs,C. D.
Brown, left here Thursday morning
for Sacramento to attend the funeral.
Twe Bitsa Pan.
The workmen digging to bedrock to
make a foundation for the north ‘abutmentof the new Main street bridge
have struck gravel that pays two bits
tothe pan. Along about 1860 John
Williams, grandfather of ex-Postmaster Wallace J. Williams, ran a tunnelin north from Deer Creek at about
that point and drifted out considerable
gold. He had to, quit before the deposit was worked out because of the
sinking of Main street which was overhead. The Manzanita ravine which
now has ita dumping place further
east came down that way in early
times, it is supposed, the theory being
that the point where the Union Hotel,
Lane’s livery stable and adjoining
buildings now stand was once a low
flat and subsequently filled up~ with
the natural wash. There is a channel
of pay grayeleven as high up as a
few feet under the ground upon which
the undertaking establishment of W,
C. Groves stands. ” oak

It. is rumored at the county seat that
a crusade is liable to be commenced
any day against sellers of lottery tickets,in conformity with the recommendation of the late Grand Jury. Seyeral
parties who have been doing a thriving
business in selling tickets have in’view
of the ominous rumor notified their patrons that they have retired from the

Old man Doremus of Dutch Flat,
who struck Frank Hoos with a stone,
the young man dying shortly after, was
exonerated by the Coroner’s jury. It
appeared from the testimony that
Doremus strack Hoos in gelf defense;
also that the: enormous quantity cf
liquor imbided by tle deceased on the
day of the quarrel was the more particular cause of death.
A civil engineer recommends that a
system of canals, be constructed 150
miles in length to carry off the water
for the purpuse of preventing the’submergence of land in ihe Sacramento
and other California valleys during the
Winter. This leads the Virginia City
Chronicle to say : ‘To persons familiar
with the situation the suggestion is pro
nounced absurd and impracticable,
as the entire valley through Which
the Sacramento river flows is now one
vast sea, submerging all the low lands
from the foothills to the ocean, and no
canal of a capacity to carry such a
volume of water could be constructed,”
~ Phe Tidings says: ‘‘We suppose the
authorities will enjoin church raffles,”
Why not, seeing that they have put ‘a
stop to raffling in saloons? If there is
any difference .between them, the
Church; raffle is the worse of the two
for the ‘reason that asa rule the premoters muke no pretense of giving
value received, They will put ‘up an
article, for instance, that would not
cost over ten dollarsin any store,
and sell from twenty to one hundred
dollars’ worth of chances in it. Although people know that, they are being cheated from a business ‘standpoint, they denot kick beceuse the
object is a worthy one; but ifa private
individual wants to sell anything by
the samg plan he must limit his selling price to the actual value or less.

CHRISTMAS DOINGS.
Trees an@ Services at the Various
“aise Churches.
Notwithstanding the very disagreeable weather on Christmas Eve the
Congregational church was filled with
the pupils of the Sabbath school and
theteachers, parents and friends of
the children, After the opening exercises which consisted of very fine
singing by the choir and Sabbath
school, Santa Claus, with his long
flowing white beard, snow-sprinkled
overcoat and jingling bells displayed
himself to the sparkling and expectant
gaze of the little ones. He mounted
the platform and took a seat upon a
beautifully gilded chair which was
adorned with evergreen and Christmas berries. Over his head spanning
the arch were the words ‘Merry
Christmas,’”’ in large letters, Other
mot!oes were displayed in different
parts of the church which was decorated in a manner to exceed anything
of the kind on previous occasions.
There were two Christmas trees, one
on either side of the platform, which
had the appearance of being tinted
with snowflakes and loaded with costly presents for young and old. Great
credit'is due tothe teachers and officera of the school for the excellent
and liberal mannerin which they provided for the happiness of their pupils,
The howling storm of Christmas Eve
did not prevent the arrival at the
Methodist Church of the ship advertised to be there. Young Ralph
Tiffany personated Captain Santa
Claus. The craft’s appearance was
greeted with joy by the spacious
church full of boys and girls. It
was beautifully decorated and lighted, and treighted to the water’s edge
with a precious cargo. Superintendent
A, J, Tiffany took charge of the exercises which consisted of songs by the
school, all well rendered—eapecially
the one dedicated as a welcome to the
ship. Mary Rickard, Annie Clemo
and Charlie Angwin gave appropriate
recitutions. Paster Angwin and Mr,
Tiffany made’a few remarks. Then
the stevedores went to work with a
will aud discharged the cargo to the
great delight of all.
At the Baptist Church there was a
beautiful tree laden with presents for
all both greatyand small. Pargon
Lennie and Dr, Hutchins made good
talks and Miss Rosabel Lennie sang
asolo. There was also singing by the
school, , It was a very happy eveniug
for the Baptist folks.
At Trinity Church Christmas morn
ing Rector Wilcox delivered an appropriate sermon and the choir renderedsome very choicemusic.
At St, Canice Church the same
morning mass was celebrated and
there was unusually fine singing.
The Party at Armory Hall.
