ger anseant THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors = MONDAY EV’NG DEC. 5. LOCAL ITEMS, Got up in as Brief a Form as It Is Possible to Do &. It is said that there are more thau thirty lodging houses kept in San Francisco by Nevada City people. Joseph Thomas, the old colored man of Grass Valley, was brought to the County Hospital on Saturday last. Miss Byrda Douglass has removed the office of the Chronicle agency to the Union Hotel. The Downieville stage arrived here yesterday afternoon, and a hard time the driver and passengers had of it, tco. The damage the late rains have done the roads has been very great, and it will cost the county big money to make repairs, James Whitcom Riley, the ‘‘ Hoosier Poet,” will soon visit this Coast and will probably give a reading in this city. That will be an entertainment worth attending. / The churches were very slimly at tended yesterday, The kind of weather we have been/having even kridcks a christian off his base. There was a heap of dissatisfaction among 4 certain class of people Saturday, on. account of ‘closed doors” in the Grass Valley breach of promise case. It if worthy of note that the Narrow Gauge trains have arrived and departed on/ schedule time during the whole run of the ‘present storm. Something that éannot be said of any other road in the / State. J. A. Stuart of Lowell, Massachusetts, has lately arrived in Auburn on a visit to his son, F. A. Stuart. In the early fifties he mined in the vicinity of Grass Valley. j : Rev. John Chisholm has, accepted the position of Deputy County Clerk of Placer county, but owing to previous engagements he will not assume the duties of the office until the first of March. : One week from tonight Grand Chief Patriarch W. C.-Savage will make an official visit to Mistletoe Encampment of this city, and the Patriarchs propose to give him a royal reception. Every year some of our merchants wonder why they do not get as much trade as others in the same line of business. The reason is obvious, One advertises in the local papers and the other does not. See? Rev. J, L. Garver, formerly pastor of the Congregational Church at Marysville, has arrived at Grass Valley and will preside over the destinies of that denomination in our sister town. We predict that everything will be serene with him there, as he has established a reputation of not allowing his congregation to ‘‘run him,’ as they do in most all other communities. ‘ —_——e-0@e-2—__—— Tue ADVERTISING of Hood’s Sarsapa rilla is always fully substantiated by enseme reer =o A QUFER BELIEP. Dr. Allen Griffiths’ Theosophieal Lecture Yesterday Afternoon. Dr. Griffiths, Pacific Coast Lecturer on Theo ophy, lectured at Pythian Castle yesterday afternoon. Questions were answered by the speaker after the dec ture and the proceedings wire very interesting. He spoke as follows : ophy is not new, but has existed in all ages. The Theosophical Society, organized in New York City in 1875 by Mme. H. P. Blavatsky, Col. H. S. Olcott and Wm. Q. Judge, is sia ply the chosen medium through which more knowledge is imparted to the race by Adepts and Ma hatmas (Great Souls). These Adepts are an order of men who possess great k now!ledge as the result of ages of study, investigation and observation of natural laws. They are the custodians of ° the mysteries, i. e. occult knowledge not \known to the masses, They are imbued ‘with Altruism aud at stated times impart added knowledge to manki:d and thus help it to advance. The times chosen are the last quarters of each century. We are now in that part of our century. Mme. Blavatsky was the messenger and the Theosophical Society is? the channel chosen to effect that end— proof of which is submitted in the fact that Blavatsky’s two works, ‘Isis Unveiled,” and the ‘Secret Doctrine,” contain knowledge not found elsewhere. The motto of the society is: ‘‘ There Is no Religion Higher Than Truth.”’ In a relative sense, truth is knowledge of what is, of natural law, of the mind of man as related to the Mind of Cosmos. A_ maxim of Theosophy is: ‘‘Believe nothing on authority, hearsay, or because of source, but rigidly investigate everything before either accepting or rejecting it.” ach individual’s experience of, and attitude toward truth, differs from every other’s; hence his conception differs. Therefure, toleration of views of others must rule, else dogmatism and mental tyranny ensue. It is believed that study of the teachings of the sages of all times, if pursued with earnest ‘desire for mbre light, will lead to the acceptance of the thrie fundamental. teachings of Theosophy proclaimed by all leaders of the race, which are: lst. The unit of consciousness is the basis of all manifestation. This is the rationale of the Brotherhood aimed at by the Society. There is but one mind, the universal ; or, as Emerson called it, the Oversoul, of which the Thinker of nan is an emanating ray, not a separate entity. Hence the true basis of Brotherhood is the spiritual nature of man. 2d, Reincarnation, or successive earth lives of each individual, the natural order of human existence and evolution. 8d. Karma, the law of cause and effect. governing human thought . and attion and connecting the many earth lives of each Thinker in all unbroken series, : Cycles of activity and inactivity sway over all nature, the Doctor continued, day and night, summer and winter. The. ebb and flood of tides are “maifestations of this law. Man is not an exception, but governed by it. His periods of TheosGospel Truth. Something for nothing seems to be the rule of some people in their dealings with newspapers. Those kind of people are the ones who have the least respect for a newspaper and can always find derogatory words for the man who is foolish enough to befriend them for the asking. Space in a paper is like the roomr in a tenement—for rent—and the man who pays gets it unless. the publisher wants to go out of business. —Maryaville Appeal, Simmons Liver Re@uiator has never failed to relieve costiveness, and blind or bleeding piles, Fine Holiday Goods. W. D. Vinton is now unpacking as fine a lot of Holiday Goods as were ever brought to Nevada City. They consist “of all varieties of goods for Christmas and New Year presents. The Thinker is one and continuous, the personalities are many. Each earth life is ‘a personality, and in each wisdom is gained through experience which, on death of the body, is added to the vast store acquired in all previous earth lives. This store is the result not only of previous earth lives but of experiences on other planets, und is the Thinker which posse ses infinite capacity, requiring infinitudes wherein to develop it. This earth affords vast opportunities, and the Thinker returns repeatedly to it to utilize them. Each earth life is an advance upon its prede+ cesscr. There is no retrogression, At death of the bedy the soulnever enters an animal form or any lower kingdem of nature, Jt has long since passed through them. One earth life is inadequate wherein to develop potentialities inhering in the Thinker; hence it returns many times to earth, where alone exist conditions for development in its present status. Jt will not permanently leave this earth and rise to a higher sphere until it has utilized and exhausted alj earthly conditions for progress, Reincarnation and Karma explain the apparently unjust suffering of many and the seemingly unmerited happiness of others, The former violated Jaw in past lives, and now pay for it; the latter obeyed law and ‘now are happy. Thus Theosophy throws light upon every conceivable racial and individual condition, and ‘enables man to solye many otherwise unsolvable problems of life and human existence, “{] Tuere’s not a charm that light’s the face, With so ineffable a grace, As sweet, pink lipsand ivory teeth; And nothing now, beneath the sky, Can beauties such as these supply, Save SOZODONT, that wears the wreath, BE ingeBitieny, So easy in its action, harmless and ef. fectual in relieving is Simmons Liver Regulator, itindnd, 2 A Tremendous Rumpus liver, Bile gets into the blood and gives a saffron to the ceuntenance and eyeballs, sick headaches ensue, the digestive organs are thrown out of gear, the bowels become costive, there are pains through the right side and shoulder blade,
