DECEMBER 6, 189 AMocel House. Tidings: The tatest of Grass Valley’s new modern dwellings is that of Robert Johne, on Church street near Main. ‘The building was ‘constructed with an eye to architectural effect, altaough its was limited, The lion2e is of two stories. The front is 14x28: feet, the ‘rear constituting an “17? 14x20 feet. Ae veranda, extends around a portion of the front and around the north side to the: “LL.” The foundations: are of stone, The house’ contains nine rooms, all of which are hard-finished. Six of these rooms are on the ground floor, including a parlor 14x14 anda dining room of equal dimensions provided with a combination china-closet and linenpress ‘set’ in the wall. -The three rooms on the second floor are reached cost hatl andthe other from the rear of the house. Each sleeping apartment is provided with a clothes-press, or closet: Inthe rearof the house there is a neatly appointed bathroom. All of the rooms are papered. Capt. 8. H. Dille was the afchitect and builder, and the job speaks for itself. The estimated cost of the building is but non, drove up to the door of the building in a buggy, hitched: his horse,. and went in. The interior painting was done by Benj. Colvin, and the exterior work in. the same line by C. Hill. There is no sense or reason in our people erecting “*hoxes’’ for dwellings when buildings like this may be constructed for $1,500. eee Pure Air Underground. A “chemical lung’? is the latest ’ thing proposed for the ventilation of mining and other tunnels, shafts, etc. It was lately tested in London by fourteen svientists. A room 15 by 18 was kept for an hour at_a temperaturs of 92 degrees, and the-air was loaded with impurities. The men of science were now.called upon to enter, and the aif was made still more impure by bura. : ing sulphur and carbonic acid gas. Then the “‘chemical lung,’’ or punkab, so called, measuring 4 by 2.6, was set in motion, The temperature was soon reduced to 65 degrees, and the air freed from all impurities, Then fat was burned, to test the machine for organic substances, and the ‘Tung’ was started up just in time to prevent. the examining gentlemen from running outfor fresh air. It is proposed to use the inyention during Cheapness of Almmnium, ae {t is now claimed by M> Adolph Minett, of France, that he can extract this metal as a commercial product ready for use, ata price not exceeding that of tinj having already produced .by his process as much as eight tons, In this process of M. Minett, the fluor ore of alumnium is decomposed by the aid of electricity, being melted by a carrent at a temperature of' 1,000 degrees centigrade.
