Those persons who desire to take advantage of the opportunity to get the Dany Transcerer® and the grea humorous weekly, Texas Siftings, fo one year by” paying $7 in advance, must do'so before February Ist, 1890, as on and after that date the Sifting: alone tannot be had for less than the regular'price of $4 a° year. This avnouncement is positive, as the clubpapers willthen céase. -Many people have taken advantage of it during. the past year, and have without exception “declared it tobe the best bargain in literature they have ever enjoyed. The regular pricein advance of the tw: papers #& $10, and the saving of $3 « year thatis effected by the combina tion isan important consideration. — Texas Siftings is. one.of the bes' known, and is certainly one pf the mos! popular, humerous and literary paper in the world. Thesecret-of its succes is the fact that ite proprietors kee; abreast of the timies; add mew and original features.to it as fast as they can ‘be obtained, and secure for ite eolumne the best talent that ean be found in the country. “With such humorists a« Alex. Worth, McCarty, Wolf arid Ver Beck ‘in the artistic department, it is not much wonder that Texas Siftings has taken the place it has in journalism. Umbrella ‘Transactions. Thursday ‘evening Con. Seaman bought from a friend a very good umbrell a at the low price of fifty cents, the seller giving as his reason for parting with it that he had two. Ap hour later Marshal; Neagle was rushing around searching for an umbrella that hud late in the afternoon mysteriously disappeared from the place ‘ where a Chinaman had aet it down for amoment while he was attending to some business. At the. first glance, he identified Seaman’s umbre!la as the one belonging to the Chinaman, and caused it 19 he-yeturned /to ie rightfal pweer, » Shortly after the above transaction Ww. Stephens of Columbia Hill who is spending the week hére, missed his umbrella, Hs has served on Seaman @ written description of it and warned “that individual that ifhe purchases it he will do so at his peril. . Stephens will pay a reward of $2.50 for the return of the umbrella and will ask ‘no questions. The Angolan: This great painting, ‘by Francis Mil~ let, recently eolditothe N. Public schools are so related to sysems of public record that theiretatisies are obtainable through’ emtablished nethods. Icorporated private schools have a place in public records. 3 Purdvhial schools generally render stated reports to some controling body. Uninéorporated private schools form a considerable element of usefulness heretofore unmeusnred. It is desirable to gather reports of the pumber of teachers and pupils in such schools, without troubling them for the financial statement that schools supported ‘hy the public fund ows to the tex payers. The enumerators of population will report each person who has attended within the year, and whether ata public or at a private school; and. for ill persons ten years old and over, those who can read and write. This will be more than has been done before. Other educational statistics must be réached by different methods, in which every one interested may render some aid. _ . “A list of pri ‘ate schools, no matter how brief, or-vames of single schools, no matter how humble, open in any part of the present yeas, with the xdviress of the principal teacher of ‘exch, will be of assistance to this office. Stina Nationa, Excuance, December 5— The Cheap Picture Boom & played alot of rough diamonds, the property of Richard Day Atkins, fora long time manager of one of the leading diamonds mines of Kimberley, South Africa. ° The diamonds are of . all shapes, sizes and colors:” One is almost as big as the end of your thumb, ard is known 4s aboast. It is the commonest kind there, black in color, and is largely used for diamond drills. and by lapidaries. Two are quite large and nearly perfect white diatnonds, needing scarcely any polish. One is slightly yellow, and another resembles amethyst. There are other diamonds of various castsof color. Mr. Atkins, the South African hunter, brought them over to compare with some Culifornia diamonds that ‘he proposed looking for. He tad heard for along time of the diamords of Cherokee Flat and elsewhere in this State, and he and Mr. Atwuod started out over a fortnight ago. Mr. Atkins carried a curious riddle, or sieve, which he used at Kimberley to separate the light from the heavy diamonds, and Mr, Atwood had hia bateau alonyto get out any yoid that might bein the residue. They visited Volcano, in Amador county, too, and French Corral, Nevada county. They succeeded in getting several diamonds, the finest of which was secured at Volcano, They also a lot of magnificent sapphires. r. Atkins is a good deal im pressed with ‘California as a possible diamond producing country, and will extend his investigations, The large diamond which they found st Volcano is now at the State Mining Bureau.
