THE ELECTRIC RAILROAD,
Tho Interview Published in Salurdny’s Tran.
script Created a Sensation.
Ip Saturday evening’s TRanscrrpr we
published an interview with Peter Tautphaus, Esq, one of the leading men in
the project of building dn electric railroad between this city and Marysville.
From the hour the Transcript made its
appearance, and up to this time, that
siibject has been the all absorbing one.
The people here cannot seem to talk
about anything else. There is a large
percentage of the people who do not
seem to have any faith in the project,
. and say ‘*the news given by the TranSCRIPT is too good to be true.” Well, it
is not to be wondered at; It was rumored here a dozen times that a railroad
would be built from Colfax to this city
before the right parties got hold of the
project. Soit has been'alout an electric
road between this city and Grass Valle .
Several years ago Goge KE. Bratid
forined ‘id company of Directors, got a
franchise from the county and assured
everybody that there was no deubt
about certain San Francisco capitalists
building the road.: It proved a fizzle.
Next came Schramm, who obtained a
franchise from the county and from the
tuwns of Grass Valley and Nevada City,
and he also assured the people that he
had sufficient backing to build the road
That, too, proved a fizzle. When Mr
Tautphaus and his partners-came here
and applied for a franchise . to: build ai
electric road between the two towns it
was not surprising that the people regarded it as the ‘‘ old chestnut.” ‘Those
who know the gentlemen who are conno doubts about the matter, and. th:
‘doubting Thon ases will very soon discover, to their delight, of course, that
they have wrongly sized up ‘Tautphau:
teveral months ag
Mr. Tautphaus and his partners sold out
their interest in the Champion mine, an
so, strougly were they impres ed wit!
the idea that this is the m ning distric:
of all districts, -that—they immediate],
set about to purchase the closed-dow:
‘Providence mine, a mine that heretofor:
had been regarded as the best quartz
mine in Califo: nia, outside « f the famous
Idaho. Tautphaus and hia partners pur”
chased the mine and appointed Car!
Davis snperintendent, with full power to
plaee the. Providence in-goodcondition
before commencing any developments.
Upen-athorough. examination of —the
property, Mr. Davis ‘informed the company that ic weuld ‘‘cost a terrible lot
of money to place the mine in good
eoudition, as the erhaft and drifts would
ing could be done.” ‘* All right,” said
‘the new owners, ‘‘ you go ahead with the
work, upon your own judgment, draw
your checks and they will be honored,
We have bought the prope rty and invend
t6 open: it.”
Mr. Davis did go ahead as directed,
and the cost was largely in excess of
anything that he had expected, and
Davis worried considerably about the
snatter, expecting every week that—he
would rezeive notice from his employers
that the expense of opening the mine
was more than they could stand, and to
close it down, and what they had expended would be charged to profit and
loss account. Not so, however. The
Davis then went to San: Francisco to
meet the members of the company. He
made his report and in substance ~told
them that ‘“‘he could not tell what was
in the ground ; that it would cost a great
deal more money than the best informed
had expected, but he believed it would
eventually, if they kept .on, prove a
good mine,” He was promptly, instructed
to ‘‘ go ahead and open the mine.” He
did go ahead, and tuday the Providence
is looking well and will véry soun be in
the front rank as the best quartz mine
in this district. As soon as possible the
/mill was started up with ten of its forty
stamps, and kept running night and day.
Then it was iicreased to twenty stamps,
and last week it was increased to thirty
stamps, aad ina very short time it will
be increased to forty stamps, and then
the Previdence, owned by about a duzen
mén who would not part with a share of
their stock at any price, will be the

leading men there. A meeting of the
few projecters was called and a report
was made. Itwas then and there decided as follows:
“A satisfactory franchise hav‘ag ‘Deen
grauted by Nevada county to ian the
road with'n the limits of that county, we
resolvéd that as soon asthe Grass Valley
and Nevada City Trustees shall grant vs
the privilege of running our 10ad through

weather will permit, guarant*eing that

Vf that is not business will not some

“Our people, who believe in the promises
made by the new company, are ducided~

after that road has been bui't then at any
