The Grass Valley papers announce that Laurel Parlor of Native “Daughters, of will give an entertainment ..next month for the, benefit-of the ladies aN “This is not this city, work at the World’s “Fair. so. At theit special meeting yesterday the Native Daughters acted upon the proposition to give an entertainment for the purpose named and very wisely concluded to abandon the idea. If they should give a benefit in the near future it will be for some local institution that is more in need of assistance than any branch of the World's Fair, and where the money raised will do more good twice over than it would if sent on to be swallowed up by the Chicago sharks after first being used toward affording a more luxurious time for the chosen few. “Chicage would get the coin, and the Native Daughters of Laurel Parler, over 2,000 miles away, would have the great honor of aiding the grand exposition to be the greatest event of its kind the world has yet looked upon, But such hener is cheap, ospecially after the States and the Nation have made such liberal appro° priations, and the Native Daughters concluded that they didn’t want any of it More honor and glory would be given to them or to any other local organization thit would get up an eutertainment ‘to raise funds for the Benevolent Society of our town, the treasury of which is almost depleted, <e+ GarpEN Seeps, all fresh and of the very . beat varieties, at Carr Bros, tf The Foote Engagement, Richard .Feote and his cempany-began “ast evening the second half of their week’s engagement at this city, giving the rich eld Spanish comedy of ‘'Don Cesar de Bazan.” Mr. Foote ~shows marked improvement in his interpretation of the titular role since he first attempted it here a year ago. Tonight the -favorite Irish play of **Kathleen Mavourneen,’”’ at the matinee, tomorrow afternoon ‘‘Lost in London” and tomorrow night ‘‘Richelieu’* are the further attractions announced. Mr. Foote’s throat is not in prime condition this week, hence he did not give the bible reading heretoforé announced. He promises to return for it a little later. The week’s engagement just finished at Grass Valley by the company was a remarkably successful one. The boxoffice receipts for the six nights amounted to $919. On Saturday evening $298 was taken in. The company is also drawing good houses here, considering the numereus counter-attractions. Woolen Wedding.Mr, and Mrs, C. L. Miller of French Corral celebrated their woolen wedding Tuesday evening. About forty invited guests were present, and the evenirg was passed most pleasantly by all. ‘Tlie invitations were quite unique, consisting of gilt-edge cards fastened with pink worsted to a background of tine white woolen goods, the edges of which were scalloped in imitation of a fancy card. The Athletic Club will give, on next Tuesday evening, February 21st, the best and most enjoyable performance they have yet given, and that is saying a great deal, because ther shows have always been of a high order, Mr. Washington having been a man of strength and courage, an athlete who tramped over a great territory and wielded the hatchet with such precision, it is meet and proper that an athletic _. performance be given to commemorate his birth and show his descendants that his early example of telling the truth and taking healthful exercise has not been lost upon his conntryinen,’ Thére will be no swords or hatchets” wielded, but instead there will be Indian clubs and wands, juggling, tumbling; horizon tal and parallel bar acts,. tramboline leaping, boxing, wréstling, and dancing Mr. Washington might be a little sur. * . prised if he was. *here, but. he would) undoubtedly go, and so will everybody else in Nevada City.
