TIEN ae The Dailu Transcript. FRIDAY. FEBRUARY’20, 1891 “A Beautiful Picture. ‘Miss Pearl Waxyoner bas just completed and now has on exhibition a Carr Brothers drugstore 4 study in brown and white that does infinite credit to her abilities as a painter. The title is “A Broken Brake and Down Grade,” and it is aftera sketch by Remington which appeared some time ago in Harper’s Weekly. The scene is laid in Arizona. The brake of a-heavily loaded stage coach has got out of working order on a steep, down graie. The males are running for _dear_life to keep out of the way of the cumbersome and fast descending vehicle, and the driver is bringing into play al] his strength and skill to prevent them from dashing over the pre¢ipies into the-canyon that-yawnson—“the lower side of the road. Every detail is carefully worked out and the “alarmed passengers, driver ‘and mules] seem to fairly breath so faithfully is the exciting scene portrayed. Leg Broken. —— Suys yesterday’s Telegraph: This moruing, Chas. Keskeys bad his lef leg broken in the shaft at the North: Star mine: Mr. Keskeys was going to going to geton the truck to enter the mine when, by some means or ether, his leg was caught between the truch and the timbers and both bones were broken above theankle. He wax taken to his lodgings dt the residence of Mrs. Palamountain and Dr. Jones was sent for and adjusted the fracture. Mr. Keskeys is suffering considerable from ‘the break, but he will be abont after awhile. It was rumyred on the streets that the leg would have to be amputated, but such is not the fact. Mr. Keskeys is the tuba player of the Koight of Pythias b band. Grass Valley’s 5 soaring farce. ce It was expected that a compromise in the Grass Valley high school troub le would be effected this afternoon,’ and the matter is probably amicably settled by this.time. The prupesed terms were as follows: That the Offered to Young Women. C. C. Wood, a retired New York banker, now living in Brooklyn, has tendered, through his wife, $125,000 to the Young Women’s Christian association af Brooklyn, to put cp a new building for the association. The building will be erected on the three lots on Schermerhorn street, between Third and Flatbush avenues, which were bequeathed to the association by the late 8. B. Chittenden. Mr. ‘Wood had been contemplating the for some timc, and decided to make it if $100,000 could be raised for s permanent endowment. He consulted with President Seth Low, D. W. Mc Williams, Traman J. Backus, A. E. Orr, Gen. C. T. Christensen and a number of others on Saturday at the Hamilton club, and the offer was formally made, provided that the $100, 000 is raised by July 1, 1891: ’ Mr. Wood, John Chaplin and Thomas ¥. Stillman were made an advisory board. The proposed building will be five stories high and will contain classrooms, workdus and Gotiiecien. It is hoped to have the building ready by May 1, 1892, when . _ the lease of the present quarters expires. —New York Commercial Advertiser.
