One of his principal fedts is that of discovering hidden ames. Yesterday the Transcript reporter got to tulking with a citizen who is well-known fur his skepticism, and. the citizen in the course of hia remarks pronounced all forms of mindreading a fraud. “But How about ee T asked the reporter. “I don’t know,” wad the fiank ad‘But Ido know. that—certain performances which seem rewarkable to Spiritualists are easily performed without the mediumship ot ‘apirits,”’ “Give us an instance.” “Well, take the matter of telling a person’s name.--WLen-you-go-to-a wedium you write out a list of seven o eight uaines. He reads thie liat,. tears . each name off aud fulds them ail up. You pick the slips up one after unother, aud suddenly he halts you with ‘wtOp! that is youra, “Your name i so and so.’ You open the list, ana fiud your name, which he has correctly — on that same lip. : TO TRLL A NAME, “The explanation,’ continued the skeptic, ‘is very simple. To begin with, every name must have, a vowel, and there are but six—a, e, i, 9, u and y. The methed wiich I have seen used is for the medium to_ash une investigator: ‘Youur name bas a Ain it, hasn't it?’ If there is an A in his name, the man says yes. ‘The inediom tuan says, ‘Yuur name begine with a A, doesn’t it?’ The mai replies either yesor no, as thy cas imay be. Joseph Kittell, Mrs. Moilie Brown. Mrs. Annie Fanning. Andrew Cole, Melville McGurn, Thom.s Smith, James Maher. Let it be assumed that this is the list shown tothe medium, and that ihe man enyaged in the sitting is xichard-Webber, + ‘There iean A in your name, I believe,” says the medium, Yes, sir,” «snewers Richard . “Your name begins with an A, does it aot.” ‘You are mistaken there. Mx “Oh, yes,’’ says the medium, “the +} suide says it-is the “name-of ~e spiriv} iriend of yours that begins with an A; ” Now, of the nine names there are x which contain the letier A— Kichard Webber, John Livesay, Mra. Aunie Fanning, Andrew Cole, Thoma: Smith and James Maher. The medium knows that the man before him ts not Andrew Cole, since he has stuted that his name does not commenc: with A; end he knows that it is not Mra, Annie Fanning, since the gentleman does not buppen to be a lady. Vonsequently the names from which u@ must select ure reduced to four. this means that he bas an eve: chance of yetting the right man in two guesses, and is certain of hitting upon it in four ventures. The chances in Johh Livenay’s case would be the same. KNOWN AT ONCE. If the man at the sitting were Joseph Kittell, andthe medium asked, “There ie an Ain your name, is there not?” Joseph would anewer in the negative—unlese he told a lie, and that would be shocking. To the medium’s remark, Ah, I seo, it ir an O-they ace so much alike,” Joseph would give an affirmative reS)onse, . Now, there are hat how Dames in the list containing an O—Joseph Kittell, Mra, Mollie Brown, Andrew cole and Thomas Smith. Of these Smith) contain the letter A, and coi sequently cannot be that of the man facing the medium, The third name is that of a woman. The medium consequently knows for a certainty ascertain that fact at once, that there is an O in peo that hers le the only i can se Me, Brow astonishment. If the pisos taka four, two (Andrew Cole and Thoma: . nn in your name, isn’t there?’ will be answered in the affirmative, and her case is at once settled. MORE OF THEM. If the experinienter is Andrew Cole, the conversation runs; : “There is an Ain your name, is there not?’’ “Yes, sir.’’ “Your name begins with A, I hear the guide say.” : That settles Andrew's vase, since his ietheonly name (except that of the lady, Mra, Annie Fanning) commencing with that letter. Let it be presumed that the gentleman who is experimenting with the spirite is Mr. Melville McGurn. Iu there an A in year name si “No, sir Ss “Ob,-no;I rinketcdl the Letters, ‘it ie an QO,” “No, air’? “Are you sure of that?” “Yes, sir,” “You are positive there is no O in “Yes, I am pesitive.’”’ “That is strange, very strange: into complete communication with the spirits yet, as I have just begun the sitting, and. consequently I am lable to make mistakes.’’ Knowing that there is neither an Anoran0O.in the name, the medium, when he comes to the list, can readily . pick out that of Melville McGurn; It ithe only one of the nine which has neither A nor O in its composition. If the person taking the sitting is thomas Smith, his name must be }picked out from those of Richard Webber, Jehn Livesay, James Maher and Thomas Smith. Here the metiam is positive of hitting upon. the right onv in -four .trisls, aad has au “jvew show of wetting it in two guesses, Che like is true of the name James Maher,As will ‘be seen by the foregoing, five of the nine names may be picked “ut at once by the method explained, snd the remaining four may be hit apon in four guesses, The medium can make his chances ill more favorable by saying, “There igan Aor an O in your name; I can’t tell which it is at the present monent,” and thus lead the. person to 4ay whether it is one of the two letters, ooth or neither, This latter method gives the fullowing results. The figures. show the aumber of names from which the uedium fhuat guess: Richard Webber. ‘obo Livesay : fosepli Kitiell drs. Moilie Brown, . vie. Annie: Fanning. Andrew Cole Wdelville McGurn,. The Republican says that at Truckee about ten o’clock Tuesday night, in ‘he vicinity of the round-honse, an adult paper-carrier named Martin Smith noticed someone walking hurriedly toward him. When they were about to méet, Mr. Smith stepped to one side to let him pass, but no sooner had he done so than a revolver was thrust into his face. Mr. Smith grabbed the weapon with both bands which was followed by a violent struggle between thetwo, during which time the revolver was accidentally discharged, the powder burning Mr. Smith’s paastalouns, the bullet passing. through the skirt of his overcoat. About this time Martin. had succeeded tn getting his hand upon his own 4evolver, drew it from his pocket, when himeelf and the would-be assassin fired at the same time, the shot from the pistol of his enemy striking . a brase-cased tapeline in Martin's vest pocket, cutting the bullet in balves; The blow knocked Martin to unconsciousness, and when he came to a sense of ol the robber had flown, Bwith says that his revolver was *. directly at his assuilant, but whether or not the shot took effecthe cannot say.
