-. " Qgear Dutton, Bloomfield, a 8 Levy, San pty: Hol Ae i CS ax TEENS: _ PE ANNUM, 66.2 ccs oder $7.00 aa — THURSDAY, OCT. 28, 1886. WAY DOWN SOUTH. _Mr. Bartlett, the Democratic ‘nominee for Governor, seems. to have escaped from his keepers} again and wandered off to the gorthern part of the State. The atmosphere about San Francisco “was getting a little unhealthful for ‘him, tainted as it is with O’Donnelism and the smell of suds from his own Chinese washhouse. The head of the Democratic ticket under the circumstances concluded to get away from the pestilential place that recognizes the “dollar limit’? and Mr, Bartlett as Mayor. We can well imagine the sort of people that will greet their fellow fossil on his advent to the southern country. They are mostly old settlers wit! crooked canes hung -on their arms, long and cadaverous, toeing in when they walk, thus showing pure blood away back tothe veins of Pocahontas, and frequently referring to the good old drys of Jackson ‘‘befo’ the waw, sir.’”’ They are not nimerous, The ‘“‘hawkers and spitters,”’ those wheezing Yankeee with onelung, or scarcely. any, have elbowed the remuants of the ‘first families’ well out of the way, introducing another form of civilization—building cities, fine houses, wide and elegant streets with electric lights, etc. This lungless race, when it gets time to attend to politics, pushes the Republican cause, as it pushes anything else that is progressive, and Mr. Bartlett will appear in the streets of Los Angeles amidst the new order of things like Rip Van Winkle after his years of slumber. We doubt ifhis political vernacnlar will be intelligible except to the carriers of useless canes who quote corn-dodgers from memory, but stiil repeat ‘‘frijoles and tortillas.’’ Wecan imagine the disgust the old remnants will feel when Mr. Bartlett rises to read that same old manuscript. which does Democratic duty on every occasion. Every old Democrat from the South prides himself on being able to make an off-hand speech, and when that candidat proceeds to mumble over a manuscript they will indeed feel that times have wonderfully changed. There is a sharp contrast between Bartlett and electric lights or cable cars, as even the blindest Democrat will perceive, Arrivale at the UNION HOTEL. Mra. J. Naffziger. .Proprietréss.
