What Steam Has Done.
“ Avery interesting calculation has
recently heen made by the ‘Statistical
Bureau in Berlin: Four-fifths of the
power machinés at present in activity
in the ‘World have been erected during
the past twenty-five years: The coun~tty -which — possesses ‘the highest
amount of horse power is the United
States, with 7,500,000 horse’ power;
follow England, with 7,000,000;
Germany, with 4,500,000; France, with
3,000,000, and Austro-Hungary, with
1,50,0000. These figures do not inelude locomotives, of which. there are
105,000 at work, with a total horse
herse power in the world is 46,000,000,
A steam ‘thorse power'’ is equivalent
to three actual horses’ strength, and
each living horse -represents — the
strength of seven men. Thus the
total horse power of the entire worid
represents the work of §1,000,000,000
men, or more than twice the total
working population of the -earth.
Steam has thus tripled the entire
human work power of the earth. —

Mrs. Lester & Crawford, the proSressive lady merchant of this city,
do not propose to let the extraordinary
weather of thie altogether unprecedented winter interfere in the slightest
degree with the customary rush and
activity at their store down on Main
street, -Just now they are kept busy
supplying the demand for woolen
foods which they have marked down
to half the usual! prices, They ‘have
an immense stock of the same, and
will have no trouble in clearing it out
as all weather-sharps agree that the
storm isnot yet nearly done.
James Cairns, the Broad gtree’

daunted in the slightest by the bottomlees snows and howling blasts. He

drinking a great deal all summer, until
several times I had been on the verge of
tremens. One Saturday evening I reached
Boston, on my way west, and before retiring I went down into the basement of the
Parker House and calied tor a glass of gin.
The bar-keeper handed me the bottle, and
while I was pouring out my drink he
placed a smuli glass of water on the counter. He madesome remark to me at the
same time, which caused me to raise my eyes
and look at him; and when I picked up my
glass, there was alittle snake in the gin. It
ceedingly active. Idropped the glass and
rushed upstairs, sent for a doctor, and have
never touched liquor since. The bar-keeper
afterwards assured me that the reptile was
in the water which he had placed before
me and not in the gin, but the explanation
came several days later, when I had sworn
off forever. However. I shall always believe that Ihad the gin in my hand and not
the water when I saw the snake in it.”
He Loved a Joke.
While Jefferson Davis was Secretary of
War a huge engineering enterprise was
commenced ; that is, the construction of the
conduit which brought water from Great
Falis, twenty miles distance, into the city of
Washington. Secretary Davis placed General M. C. Meigs in charge of the work,
and, it is needless to say, that it was well
performed. General Meigs had a son Montgomery, who lost his tife during the civil
war. He wasa veritable wag and wit, alWays playing some practical joke. Well,
when the conduit was com leted, and before the water was turned on, General
Meigs made a tour along the great pipe and
wrote upon its walls, just above the waterline, at long intervals: “M. C. Meigs, eninscription: “Ana his son Monty.” The
conduit was recently examined, and there
were the words, just as written by poor
Monty about thirty years ago. ;
