ee THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. . WEDNESDAY EV'NG, FEB. 3, 1892. “4 TROE AND, NOBLE MAN? Thoughts Suggested on Viewing the Grave of A. A. Sargent {S. F. Call} Weary in mind and body, what a relief it is to break away from the tu.nults aad worry of life’s troubles and hie to some quiet and peaceful place to rest. baa mig om andre straggling mass of living people to reposeful retreat of the dead, where the very air is soothing and the winds say “rest.” Gently winding my way along the paths between the graves at Laurel Hill, I sce occasionally the mame of an acquaintance or friend and my mind wanders back to the days when they were fight-. W.-W. ing life’s battles as I am doing yet, and I ‘wonder what trials and troubles are yet before me. : As I plod along some peculiar monument or inscription draws my attention, and I atady the surroundings for indications to obtain seme insight into the characteristics of the mortal grhose remains are turning to dust in the soil before me. Here and there some cestly vault or monument indicates the great worldly possessions of the deceased, whi'ea humBile bit of stonenot far away and almost covered with weeds vouches for, perhaps, equally as much affection and grief on the part of those whe placed it there. Almost unconsciously my steps have led me to a spot most dear to me, and as I gaze upon the resting-place of my departed friend I almost feel the hearty ‘grasp of his hand-in mine again. A more. befitting structure could hardly be conceived to mark his grave. Solid as a rock, white and pure as snow, graceful in design, it reflects in part the sterling qualities of him who sleeps bemeath it. It is conspicuous for its beautiful simplicity, aod attracts the attention and admiration which many. elaborate and costly sepulchers fail to do, and is indicative ef the good taste and refinement of those whese leving hands erected it, AARON AUGUSTUS SARGENT, Born at Newburyport, Mass., Sept. 28, 1327; Died August 14, 1887. PRINTER. Lawrnr. Sen 4ror. Muvister PLEentrorenriary. Such an inscription speaks volumes and is a very instructive lesson to posterity. Itis convincing proof ef what can be accomplished in spite of the enormous obstacles placed in the rough paths of life which must be traveled by*those who A eelf-made man he was indeed. In every statien of his life he earned himself @ place in the front ranks. As a printer he was able and prominent. As 4 lawyer his success and remarkable talents élicited the admiration of eminent members of the bar. As a United States Senator he was the peer of the most distinre e . S ‘ 4 _ and neble man.” guished of bis colleagues. As « Minister Plenipoteatiary bis correct interpretation of the duties of his office stimulated him to represent America as she should be represented, and history telle how well he did it. Beautiful as his grave is marked, it is infinitely inferior to the glorious moaument he created for himeelf. Like a brilliant sunbeam it reaches to the feotstool of our Father, where the recording angel carved upen it the welldeserved inscription: ‘‘He was a true G. B. Two facts have been pretty conclusively settled in the minds of the public -—the first that th? Reyal Baking Powder Company has found the means,’ and uses them, to make « chemically pure article of food; and the other that the} market is full of poisonous, alum. and other adulterated baking pewders, which, no matter hew strongly endorsed by “‘eemmercial” chemists, ore te be studionsly avoided. ' A pure baking powder is one of the chief aids te the cook in preparing perfect and wholesome food. The recent . eentroversy in the press has left it no longer a-question with those who desire purity and wholesomeness of food what baking powder they shall use. ————EEEEEE In vain the eyes are filled with light: In vain the cheek with beauty glows, Unless the teech are pure and white,Unless the breath is like the rose; And SOZODONT alone supplies These heauties that we all so prize,Have You the Grip or Symptoms of It ? Every square inch of hi#short fat person was begrimed and dirty. “*"S'pose I look like a Digger Indian just dug,” he remarked, putting his head into, the window at the burean of information, and letting his imitation leather valise drop on the floor with a thud. “Oh, well a little jagged, perhaps,” responded the clerk politely. “No jag around me,” said the dirty tourist indignantly. “I only got in ten minutes ago.” So?” “Yes. Haven’t washed sence we left Council Bluffs. Would you believe all “We had a gay ‘time, 1 tell yer.” “How’s that?’ inquired the clerk. “Well, you see, a feller from South Dakota opened the winder just in front of mea while after we had started and the cinders come in like it was a hailstorm. I didn’t want to’ pear disobligin, 80 L-stood it fer three hours, and then I leaned over to the South Dakota feller, and says I, a ttle dusty, ain't it? ‘Mebbe,’ says Would you mind shuttin down that er fer a spell? says I, as perlite as ron. please. ‘I find it very annoyin.’ Ould mind,’ says he, ‘and if Ican stand it, I'll bet you can.’ ‘Well, if it’s a bet, you say,’ says I, ‘I’m in it, I don't let no South Dakota feller bluff me. I'll bet you fifty dollars, even money, you'll weaken on that open winder before I do.’ “He looked surprised, but he says, ‘It’s ‘a go.’ “We put up the money with the conductor, and he snuggled up to his winder and I behind, takin the dust sortér secondhand. Attheend of the first twentyfour hours we wasn’t purty fer a cent, and I see’d the other feller was squirmin a good deal. So when the train sto pped fer dinner I sneaked out to the engineer and gave him my last ten dollar bill, and says I winkin, ‘When you start up the . Seed engine it'll bea pertickler favor to ime if you won't screen back’ them cinders; ‘let em flicker for two or three hours; just buzz out every cinder you've got.’ ‘* ‘My coal,’ says he, a winkin back, ‘is terrible soft and muddy today.’ “Well, sir, the next three hours was awful. I never seed such smoke and coal dust anywhere. The way that engine snorted and blowed and them cinpassengers off the train. It aciually seemed as though the screen business had busted clean out of the smokestack and Jet the coal-blow through in chunks. The dirt was so thick on my face you could have wrote my name in it, but that feller from South Dakota he caught them cinders right in the neck. He was almost buried. There was cinders in his hair, cinders, in his mustache; they worked down inside his collar; into his vest pockets. And when he. started to brace upona chew blamed if he didn’t vite more cinders than tobacker, About hen it came up to rain, and for an hour vhat feller from South Dakota locked ike he was dredged up from a mud yond. When the rain stopped and he was wipin down the mud, along come a ved hot cinder as big as a pea and lit on ais beard. The brakeman helped him put out the fire, but just then the train stopped and that feller riz up and says walked right off the train. Then all the passengers congratulated me, They said I was dirty, but game.” “So you got the money?’ inquired the clerk with some interest. ‘‘Well that’s the trouble,” dirty traveler. ‘‘While I was fixin the engineer blamed if that onery cuss wasn't goin me one better and fixin the conductor, and they froze to the cash and skipped together. The trouble with me is,” added the grimy traveler, gazing out pensively at the Forty-second street hackmen, “‘that I’m too honofable and confidin, always.been so. Say.” he added in a whisper, poking his dirty head in the window, ‘gimme a quarter fera wash. will yee?”—New York Tribune, A Negro Servant's Wit. A copy of the Salem (Mass.)
