PROM WASHINGTONA Political and Personal eet eye )., tional Capital __ es ~WaAsiitINaTON. D. C., Feb. 34,"1800. Eprror TRANSCRIPT—Speaker Reed ae Bae & is $7,000 a year. is certainly the most abused man {. Next came down to Ormonde, spend=. the country just-now, but having mapped ‘oul his course he goes calmly ahead, and keeps his temper. Th: re was, at first, some difference of opinjon inthe ranks of the Republican members, but since the fight began the party is acting as one man in.support-of the Speaker. Mr. Reed’s actions are for the purpose of righting a wrong of long standing. He_ believes . také a.majority ought to control legislation and ‘be responsible oaly to:the people. The Democrats are making a hard fight and if will probably last until the Republicans have a quorum of their own in the House, and it will not be véry long before they will have it. The last four days have been the most exciting in the House since the reconstruction days, but when one comes tosum up. what his been done it amountsto little more than roll calls and personal abuse of the Speaker by Democratic members. The question. before the,, House was the report of the Election committee in the Smith vs. Jackson contested election case, which the Democrats objected to taking up and which has not yet been disposed A strong effort is to be made this Week to get a.quorum of Republicans in their seats in the house. They would have had, and fully expected to have, a quorum of their own members’ New York Friday night, and two otbers were too sick to occupy their seats, though oné of them—Rock well,of Massachusetts, sent word that he would take the risk of leaving his bed if his presence would make up the desired quorum. With the present number of Republican members of the House it is well nigh impossible to keep a quorum ef that party on the floor of the House for twodays at atime. It will be different a little later on. Secretary Noble is very anxious that the Senate should take early action in the Oklahoma town-site bill, and that the bill organizing the--Ter-} ritory of Oklahoma should be hurried up in both houses. He has paid several visits to both the house and the ’ Senate committee on Territories to urge early action to avoid trouble and bloodshed. The territorial bill was reported to the House today. Ohio has scooped another fat position, Sudge W. H. Taft, son of ex-At torney General Taft, having been appointed Solicitor General in place of O. W. Chapman deceased. The pay Secretary Windom’s silver bill is not meeting with ‘as much favor as was expected: It has Republican opponents in both House and Senate. Several representatives ofthe G. A. R. are here working in the interests of the service pension bill framed by « should be two Vice Presidents, and he has a bill providing for them now be. ‘that organization. Representative Dibble thinks there fore the House Committee on the election of President and Vice President. oe Representative Payson —of Illinois is an invaluable assistant to Speaker Reed during these stormy days. — There isan unverified rumor float_.ing around here that says Secretary “Noble will leave the cabinet to take the place vacated by Justice Brewer in the’United States District Court. Senator Allison has got back from Iowa. He says his election is al! right, only a matter of time. The Mormons, through their attorneys, are still hammering away at the bill for the admission, of Idaho. They object tothe test oath clause in the .constitution adopted by that territory. ee The House Committee on Commerce will not report either of the several bills for the repeal of the inter-state commerce law. Forry-Niner. SEE A sPprinc medicine is needed by everyone. Winter food, largely con. sisting of salt meat and animal fats, cause the liver to become disordered and the blood impure, hence the necessity of a cleansing mapocine.
