I. J. Rolfe, of this city, was Mr.
Sims’ competitor in seeking the
nomination for legislative honors,
“hence the falsity of the Chroni» cle's assertion that Mr. Sims defeated an anti-Sargent man, and
that he was nominated upon that
issue. Mr. Rolfe is an out and

Mr. Sims has never cenversed five

‘In justice to Mr. Sims’ opponent, Mr. Ford, who is the soul

information it hus recelved respecting Mr. Sims, which was
doubtless from some unscrupulous weight, alum or phosphate powenemy who thus hoped to diminish the overwhelming majority

“A COPPERHEAD.”
The Pacific. Veteran, which is

Army of the Republic on this
coast, makes the. following patriotic reference to one of the numerous candidates for Governor of
California : ;
‘Veterans respect the courage
displayed by their enemies upon
_ the field of battle, and can meet
and greet them with the soldierly
courtesy born of bravery; but if
there is any one being shunned
and despised by Union soldiers it
is the animated thing well known
in troublous. war times as a ‘Copperhead.’
“Too cowardly to aid the rebel
cause by military service, they
sought to chill the spiritof patriotism that animated the people of

to render futile every effort made

“The war closed, aud contrary
to all their hopes, ‘and despite
their.malignant efforts to prevent
it, the flagof the Union waved in
triumphant glory over Our Country ; and it was then supposed that
these crushed reptiles would seek
some slimy spot, and remaining
_ quiet, would eventually perish of
_ their own poisonous exhalations;
but it seems that one of them has
lived, and has ‘wiggled’ forth to
again pollute the atmosphere of
this free country by its presence.
