water 40 another reservoir at the works
of the company, 1,000 feet above the
wines. . These water supplies are the
most extensive ever gathered for mining purposes in this State.
The gravel claims of the company
ure 250 to 600 feet in depth. Prospecting shafts were first sunk. to the
bottom of the channel, and drifts run.
in various directions. Tne shafts de
veloped a depth of 140 feet of blue
gravel, Above this bed is white gravel,
varying from 50 to 3650 feet. The blue
gravel contains the most, gold. To
work the gold ia this deposit of blue
gravel, it'was decided in April, 1872,
to open up the ground by means of
eight shufteand atunnel 8,000 feet
long. Hamilton Smith, Jr., an able
engineer, who had been appointed
Superinténdent and En_inéér of tlie
company in August, 1871, made the}
surveys and plans for this new deparPending these..projected -improvements, tlre work was d layed by
the prospect of seliiag a portion of the
interests of the company. The sale
fell threugh, end the sugye.ted improvement was” decided” ‘upon. The
tunnel was commenged April 25, 1872,
and finished November 17, 1974.
During the 24g yeara that this work
wasin-progress; eight-sete—of hoisting
and pumping works were in operation; and the only accidents were the
breaking uf a spur wheel, which delayed the machinery for a week, and
the loss of one life by a premature explosion. The total cost of the tunnel
was $498,826. Outside of the Sutro
funnel, it is probably the longest
mining tunnel in the country. It is
63¢ feet high by 6 feet wide for the
tiret-6,000 feet, and8 by 8 feet for the
other,2,000 feet.
Finding it had more water than it
could dispose of profitably, the
company-in 1872 organized the Milton
Water andGravel Mining Company,
giving one-half the capital for the
French Corral, Red Rock and—Manzanita mines and ditches, Subsequently additions were made to the property of this company, but the North
Bloomfield retained its one-half interestinthe Milton, The three mines
above named were put inte the new
organization at a cash value of $150,000 each, or $450,000. The yield of
the North Bloomfield from 1867 to
1870 was $121,378 and from 1870 te
1874 it was $96,700. This was from
the working of the gravel. In 1873
and 1874 the main supply of water was
acld to the Milton Company. Washing
through the main. tunnel was commencedin 1875. The gross yield and

attractions bringing 9 large number of
distinguished people to the Capital

imposing-and succeesful'in all particulars, and have already been extensively noticed in the prese. Col.
Markham in his_ address gave the
mining interests the first fair official
recogaition which those interests have
reveived for vears. In the midst of
his remarks he was interrupted by long
continued appalause, the only app'ause
in fact which was given during the
delivery ef the inangural. His gratification was indicated by turning his
gaze in the direciion of the sound of
the applause and later in appreciative words to the Senators and Assemblymen who paid their respecta to
him. It is generally admitted that
he has proven that his asstirance that
he Was no enemy of the mining intereats Was sincere, and that hia administration will prove his asaurance
to be true.
