These water supplies are the most extensive ever gathered for mining purposes in this State. The gravel claims of the company ure 250 to 600 feet in depth. Prospecting shafts were first sunk. to the bottom of the channel, and drifts run. in various directions. Tne shafts de veloped a depth of 140 feet of blue gravel, Above this bed is white gravel, varying from 50 to 3650 feet. The blue gravel contains the most, gold. To work the gold ia this deposit of blue gravel, it'was decided in April, 1872, to open up the ground by means of eight shufteand atunnel 8,000 feet long. Hamilton Smith, Jr., an able engineer, who had been appointed Superinténdent and En_inéér of tlie company in August, 1871, made the} surveys and plans for this new deparPending these..projected -improvements, tlre work was d layed by the prospect of seliiag a portion of the interests of the company. The sale fell threugh, end the sugye.ted improvement was” decided” ‘upon. The tunnel was commenged April 25, 1872, and finished November 17, 1974. During the 24g yeara that this work wasin-progress; eight-sete—of hoisting and pumping works were in operation; and the only accidents were the breaking uf a spur wheel, which delayed the machinery for a week, and the loss of one life by a premature explosion. The total cost of the tunnel was $498,826. Outside of the Sutro funnel, it is probably the longest mining tunnel in the country. It is 63¢ feet high by 6 feet wide for the tiret-6,000 feet, and8 by 8 feet for the other,2,000 feet. Finding it had more water than it could dispose of profitably, the company-in 1872 organized the Milton Water andGravel Mining Company, giving one-half the capital for the French Corral, Red Rock and—Manzanita mines and ditches, Subsequently additions were made to the property of this company, but the North Bloomfield retained its one-half interestinthe Milton, The three mines above named were put inte the new organization at a cash value of $150,000 each, or $450,000. The yield of the North Bloomfield from 1867 to 1870 was $121,378 and from 1870 te 1874 it was $96,700. This was from the working of the gravel. In 1873 and 1874 the main supply of water was acld to the Milton Company. Washing through the main. tunnel was commencedin 1875. Markham aad the inaugural ball have proven a series of attractions bringing 9 large number of distinguished people to the Capital City. The inaugural ceremonies were imposing-and succeesful'in all particulars, and have already been extensively noticed in the prese. Col. Markham in his_ address gave the mining interests the first fair official recogaition which those interests have reveived for vears. In the midst of his remarks he was interrupted by long continued appalause, the only app'ause in fact which was given during the delivery ef the inangural. His gratification was indicated by turning his gaze in the direciion of the sound of the applause and later in appreciative words to the Senators and Assemblymen who paid their respecta to him. It is generally admitted that he has proven that his asstirance that he Was no enemy of the mining intereats Was sincere, and that hia administration will prove his asaurance to be true. There are many familiar faces here —among them Mr. Mason of Truckee, the chicf Secro.ary of the Assembly ; Dick “Tuomas, Assistant Secretary of]: G. Waite, Secretary of State ; Ex-Superintendent of Schools Tiffany, Clerk to the State Superiotenden of Public Instruction; and] others besides our Senator and Assemblymen. I saw Ex-Assemblymen Sims, Senator Preston and Mr. Tiffany in close consultation in the corridors of the Golden Eagle Hotel today, but whether they were arranging maatters of legislation or discussing the etiquette of the approaching inaugural ball I'am unable te say. At the. breakfast table at the Golden Kagle-this._ morning I ubserved Senator Preston’ chatting -pleasantly: with Capt. J.-S) Young and his estimable wife. The Cap'ain is a resident. of Healdsburg, in comfortable @ircumstances, and is a member of Gov, Markthain’s statf.ths wife was Miss La Grange, formorlya teacher in the Washington (Novaca county) school, and will be comemhered. plaasantly by many of your readers. = Secretary Waite andfamily are occupying @ fine suite of rooms on L street, near the capitol building, and roundings. Mr. Waite enters upon the discharge of his official duties in a* manner Which indicates that he is familiar with the duties of his—office and that his.administation will suffer nothing in comparison with that of his predecessors. He has hosta of callers and receives hearty congratulations of his friends in both political parties. Assembly man Hocking has already begun to make his influence felt in the Assembly, and will yet: prove that the position which he holds is no empty honor, Assemblyman Garver is keeping a close watch of legislative matters,, and his constituents need have no fear that any of their interests will suffer from any inattention or lack of activity on his part. In the . Senate but -little has been done except the usual routine of organizing in accordance with caucus regulations. Senator Preston has thus far taken but little active partin the routine work, but those who are heis holding himself in reserve that he may make his influence felt in legislative matters where it will do the most good.
