there’ but a few days, he performed some
very valuable services, for which the
Pinanagers of the Anti-Debri#’ Association .
are loud in their praise. During his stay
in the mountains:his experience was such
as to add largely to the discredit of the
good promises made by the miners at the
joint ‘eonvention, held with the farmers,
in San Francisco last spring.
1o a Democrat reporter Mr. Colford
made a detailed statement of his visit,
and in all his maneuvers and vonduct no
winer can truthfully accuse him cf one
dishonorable or ungentlemanly act, and
hy'no means deserving of the shameful
and threatening treatment which he received at the:hands of # lot of men who
had pledged their honor that they would
desist from all unlawful mining until the
legislation proposed could be had. The
following is a partial review of his experience: :

went direct to Gold Run and took up his

following day was spent in a general observation of the surrounding country and
making the acquaintance, of those with

of gaining an interview with the ‘gentle.
men he was particularly in search.
Especially did he endeavor to gain some
infermation from the small boys and girls
he met on the streets, but they all seemed to be imbued with the instincts o
silence, and they appeared to not even
know their own tiames or where anybody
lived, much less the names or whereabouts
of any prominent miner, and it seemed
ap utter impossibility to get even a description of Mr. Stewart. "
On New Year’s eve Mr. Colford made
a trip to Dutch Flat, where he found the
people-very suspicious and familiar with
the object of his visit, or atleast that “a
