T ough he remained away five years, he again came to California, and in 1853 took up his residence at Nevada City, where he has ber when he remoyed to San Francisco. A considerable change-had taken place in the method by which mining was carried ow, and on viewing the sitdation Mr. Maltman concluded that the busi= ness of reducing ores and the extraction of the gold from sulphurets would prove profitable, and that werks for this purpose were much needed. Having made up his mind in-this direction he was soon engaged in the work. At tirst he hadassociated with him a partner, but afterwards conducted the business ‘alone, which he continued.to do until last year, purchasing both rock and sulpurets from those engaged in mining, and reducing them on his own account. The works established by hint in December, 1358, were the first of the kind on the Pacific coast. He devoted much time and thought to the devising of means for the. profitable re= duction of rebellious ores, an which he had a very considerable success. Comparative Strength and Purity of the Diterent Brands OMically Determined. Prof. Haines, Consulting Chemist of the Chicago Board of Health, Gives His Opinion. — {From Chicago Tribune. The public is always responsive to suggestions about the food it eats. Great interest has been taken in the investigaCanadian governinents and by the different boards of health to show the purity or impurity of milk, baking powders, spices, and other articles of daily use in the culinary department~of~our—heuseholds. Just now the subject of baking powder is claiming public attention. We all ‘lesire. pure and wholesome bread and. this cannot be had with the use of impure _2F poisonons baking powder.. Lhere--eew] SHO Tonger aiy question that all the cheaper lower grades of baking powders sontain either alum, lime or phosphatic acid, . ae The official analyses by the United States and Canadian governments have sherefore been studied with -interest and’ 1ave pretty clearly established the facts apon this subject. The United States government report gives the names of eighteen well-known powders, some of them advertised as pure cream of tartar baking powders, that contain alum. The report shows that the Royal baking powder was found the highest in leavening strength, evolving 160.6 cubic inches of gas per single ounce of powder. There were eight other brands of cream of tartar powders tested and their average strength was 111.5 cubic inches of gas per ounce of powder. ; The Canadian government investigations were of a still larger number of powders. Tie Royal baking powder was here also shown the purest and highest in strength, containing 129.32 cubic inches Nine other cream of tartar powders were tested, their average strength being reperted tobe 89 cubic inches of gas per ounce, “ These figures are very instructive to the practical housekeeper. They indicate that the Royal baking powder goes more’ than 33 per cent. further in use than the others, or is one-third more economical. Still more important than this, however, they prove this’ popular article has been breught to the highest degree of purity —for toit# superlative purity this superiority in strength is due—and consequently that by its use we may be insured the purest and most wholeseme food. The powders of lower strength are found to leave large amounts of inert matters in t e food. This fact is emphasized by the report of the Ohio State Food Commissioner, who, while finding the Royal practically pure, found no other powder to contain less than 10 per cent. of inert or foreign matters. The public interest in this question has likewise caused to be made investigations by our local authorities. Prof. W. 8; Haines, of Rush Medical College, consulting chemist of the Chicago Board wf Health, has found results similar to those reported by the national and Canadian authorities. Dr. Haines says: Rusu Mepicau Coirker, Cuicago, Ill. I have recently obtained samples of . Just Tn just 24 hoursJ. I recoghized in it an herb the Mexicans used to give us in the early 50’s for bowel troubles. As the result of my tests I fin the Royal baking powder superior to all the others in every respect. It is entirely free from all adulteration and tnwholesome impurity, and in baking it gives off a greater volume of leavening ‘as than any other powder. It is, therea not only the purest, but also the strongest. powder with which I am acquainted. ae « Watrer S,“Harrs, M. D., Consulting Chemist, Chieago Board of Health. The statistics show that there is used; in the. manufacture of the Royal bakmg powder more than half of all the érean: of tartar consumed in the United States for all ‘purposes. The wonderful sale thus indicated for the Royal baking powder—-greater than that of all other baking powders combined—is perhaps . even a higher evidence than that already quoted of the superiority of this article, and of its indispensableness to_inodern cookery. = -_——-— -~+ ee —w Is Ita New ‘Fake?’ _ A gentleman in a lettér to Dr. Keeley, of Dwight, Tll., atated that he had been suffering for-several weeks with the grip. Last evening's Tidings says: The new schoolhouse matter will again be taken up by the Board of Education early in April, if not before. In the meantime the best method of ‘heating and other preliminaries are being considered: by the Board and the architect. In view of the fact that to build on the unsightly, inconvenient’ and crowded Church Hill site will necessitate $1200 for séwerage, $800 for the purchase of the Byrne lot and at least $500 for excavating, etc., itis stated that a majority of the directors are now disposed to favorably consider the large Si Hill lot on Auburn street, which may be had for $2400. ‘The cost for sewerage and excavating in connection with the Hill lot would be very small indeed, . tenement Bucklen’s Arnica Salve.
