We think there must be some mistake somewhere, for Governor Markham has surely got backbone enough to agt upon his own judgment on all matters appertaining to his office. The basis uf the Chronicle's remarks are founded upon the fact that Registrar Brown of San Francisco has been called upon to hand in his resignation, and further that Gov. FALLING IN LVR What a Lady Who Has Been Theo Hs to Say About It. Clara Belle has been writing lately of how women fall in love. In her most recent article she has probably approached very near to the truth. Why do women fall in love?, she asks, Many a happy and Many an unhappy wife: looka -back=aad-wonders. — Nine: times out_of ten they fell in love wher the man who made love most to their taste came along. Also a git] falls in love about the time she makes up ‘her mind she ought to, and with the man who happens along. This is something half of them will not ,Confegs, but the same half will knc w it is true; Many a girl does not know she is in love till he asks her to be his wife. Then she has to . , say-something. To say **No” will be to give him up. She decides ‘she does not want to give him up, and that makes her think she loves him, So she says *‘Yes,’ A ‘big percentage of girls fall in love’ with the first min who makes love to them. Ifa woman escapes the tirst man many times, and so stands a chance of finally getting the mght man. Yoii see, when the first man makes love it isa new sensation to the girl, Her heart beats and /her head gees around. Sho thinks it is the man, but it isn’t. “It is go around aud her heart beat, and think: ing it is the man, decides she is in love with him. Pooh! She isn’t! “If something happens. and ‘she does not finally . marry him she will find her heart beats and her head goes around the next tine she is made love to. Then she begins to think. Then, if she decides that she likes to have her head go around and her “heart beat and is sure that it is lovemaking and not any. particular man that makes things go that way, she goesin for the sensation merely and becomes a wicked flirt. The wicked flirt is just: the girl who stands the best chance of come. Presently she gets tired of everything, aud her head won’t go areuud any more, and as for her heart she wonders if it evér—will_beat_ or ever did beat. She thinks life is all over and there isn’t any fraud so big as “love.” ‘Then, all of a sudden; something happena quite different, and if the long ceurse of flirting has not made her desperately fond. of taking risks, she settles things very quickly, “marries the man she really loves, and is as likely to be happy aud as likely to be unhappy as the other woman.
