EEE eas The Melancholy Days.? _In-good truth, the the melangboly. days] stove nave come to many, In medical ethics it is said, there is no poison without its antidote, and in like manner-there is_no pain, mental or physicul, without its relief. The melancholy part ht are-those_wherein the coming of pain is feared, or pain really experienced. The balmy and delightful a'r tu the healthful, seems filled with chill and moisture to the ailing, the sure provocatives of rheumatic aches and neuralgic throbs; indeed all aches and pains are thus influenced, But the ocvasion should’ be full of hore, and‘the cencern of the sufferer only as to thé surest and best relief: There is no question abeut this. A New York correspondent writes as follows: Wher an eld Californian whoknows every inch ef ‘the dear old ground, who has mined in every district, fished in every mountain stream, shot OVer acres of murety and upland, fiuds himself anchored there, with long scope and cant get the mud hook up, strain as he may, it just makes his Heart year to pick up @ California paper and read of big strikes and successful mining all over the country, and especially do the said bowels rumble rebelliously when he thinks of old Califortvia. 'To have to atay here and endure all this rattle, rushing, crowding'and struggle, which visions of the successful and quiet life you fortunates enjoy far away from this wear and tear, is decidedly rough. A man who has never exchanged all that for this rattle and bang can’t appreciate his good foftune in being spared the infliction of “high civilization,” which consiets in being obliged to wear a stove-pipe hat; a high collar that eaws his ears, and gloves, no soft hats, and turn down collar;and to admit you smoke a pipe on the sly is a confession to cause a loss of caste. “Do you won-der that an old Californian retires into up feelings by letting off a few cuss words? You: would do it yourself. The. time was when New York had a good deal of business with and faith in California, The daddies of the present generation shipped goeds and invested in mines, but the present stock is ignorant of the geography band resources of California. They know nothing of it, all they know is Wall Street. If you go to them about a-mine-they hold up their hands in -holy horror aad begin to tell you how much money their daddies lost in raines, but never mention. how much they made on the yellow soap and pickles they ‘shipped or how much they madeon some other mine. Ifa man loses a dollarina mie it ia the bigyest dollar that ever was, and they never cease to squeal over it, but they -ge-into.Wall Streetand get cleaned out root and branch, but that is all right, whereas, the chances in mines are ten to Ons Over wh investinent in Wall Street. I havein my mind this moment two men to whein I presented a legitimate proposition, and only arked them to put up a small installment on a working bond, but they couldn’t think ef such an investment, too much risk and uucertainty ;~ They had “their legitimate business and could not depart fromit. The legitimate . business was dealing in sbares in Wall Street. I said, “There are no panics in mining, ‘tis a legitimate business, and the percentage of success is many degrees above even merchandizing and a hundred per cent over Wall Street.” They declared mining tobe.a fraud. I said, “Suppose. that belief was. universal and everybody guit it, where would you fellows get your money to gamble on? You don’t want to do it, but You want 'tother fellow to do it for yous-Well-wait-and “see how you will come out on your theory when the next panic on Wall Street knocks you sky. high.” Sure enough, it was uot inany days before a panic did come and’ it so happened that these very two men got it heavy. One dropped an even $490,000 and the other over a million. It was only a day or two since that I encountered one of them iran elevated car going home, aud vould not resist rubbiag it in‘a little. I said, ‘How about legitimate business on Wall Street versus mining?” He got up, parted his coat tail and said, ‘‘Just kick me, will you. Whyin sheol didn’t you make me put a little money into’ that scheme? Why! I have lost enough to buy half a dozen mines,” “Oh yes, of course, but then that would pot have been your idea of legitimate have lost your money: more effectually .”” No, it is ‘of very littie use to talk mines and mining to these pig heads. They fall back on tradition’ of how much mong sémebody fost, and talk of the of worthless mining stock ‘. they fell heir to from their daddes, but whefyou-ask-how about the cords and cords of worthless railroad shares and bonds they found in the tin box they are mum. It is exasperating to try to talk to such narrow minded, bigoted fools, New York is no market for mines. It matters little how good they may be, the prejudice is déep'seated and it is labor lost to undertake to get a dollar towards the best and also safest business of the day. If one-effort in ten succeeds that one success Govers all the previous losses probably, and pats the individual ahead. _ We fellows who have been there know all this, but we waste our lives and time herein this kind of mission_,ary-work,.and. California miners must fall back oa home capital and home enterprise. There ia no help from this quarter. We have a country that] store is unrivaled, anda business far ahead of Wall street, so let us thank: the Lord that we are not doomed to live always in this Gold*blooded, bigoted country. You fellows, especially who 8, should be thankful. You are free panics, and a slump ef ten per cent on railroad stocks don’t keep you eau nights and walking the floor, All the i money endugh to get don’t have much prot inf iv; i 2 be z z ie es dark~corner and retisves his pent}business, you certainly could not} to raise that, Your sympathies should go out, too, to us poor fellows who are waiting te get the money. for what we have sold. To make asale of anything is difficult enough, to get the money after you have, isa trial of patierceand endurance. These people can owe you money ‘and come nearer not paying it than any community that lever met. They are a cheeky lot, you bet. ; oO. New York, Dec. 31, 1890. ; PERSONAL L MENTION. The variations, however, are considerable. Thus the prodpct in 1847 was only $889,085 of gold, and $939,085 of silver, whereas the corresponding figures last year were $32,800,000 and $64,645,000.
