NEW STAMPS,
They Can Now. Be Obtained at the Nevada
City Postoffies:
Postmaster Calkins this morning received 9 big lot of the new postage
stantps‘frém thé Government Stamp
Agency at Hartford, Conn. The denominations réceived are the one, two,
four, five, ten and fifteen-cent stamps,
these being the kinds most called for at
the office tere. Although the Columbian etamps have been on sale at the
large city offices for some time, Nevada
City ig pypbably the first office in this
part of the Staté to reseive them for distribution” te purchasers.
The stamps différ’ih size from those
now in use, the-engraved space being
seven-eighths of an“ineh by one and
eleven-thirty-seconds inthe’, each stamp
bearing a design commemorative of the
discovery of America by Columbus. The
details of the design are as follows: A
white-faced imprint of the years 1492
and 1892 in the upper left and right
hand corners respectively ; then in white
shaded capitals beneath in a waved line
the words ‘‘ United States of America,” . U
below which, in a narrow tablet conforming te the-curved frame to the. picture under it, are the words of denomination, for example, ** Postage 2 cents,”
or ‘‘ Postage 5 cents,” etc. Thepictures
are different on the different denominations. Below we give a description of d
the pictures upon the stamps received st} ©

The new stamps are very pietty and
appropriate, and will be sold_only this
year. Parties wishing stamps of the
-present issue can obtain them instead of)
the Columbian stamps, if they desire. A
full set of the new stamps costs $16.26.
The Columbian stamped envelopes have
not been received here yet, but are expected soon. The design consists of an
embossed citcular stamp, considerably
larger thar present series, bearing
prefiles of ms and Liberty above
the figure of . -agle with outstretched
wings and surmounted by a shield simi-)
lar to that used im the arms of the United
