Marysvitze, Jan. 17th, 1891.
Epitor Transcrirpt:—The Citros
Fair here bas attracted an immense
crowd, larger than any county fair.
A large propertion of those attending
are of -the land-owner class,. and
their. families are with them. ~The
number of the fair sex attending exré. ceeds that of the male gender, and as . “*¢is8ed sooner than any of us expects:
a rule the ladies are fashionably attired. The precentage of really handis an air of refinement among most of
them that i9-in-striking-contrast-with
in taost of those who patronize soanty
or State fairs.
: Every hotel and boardimg house is
of course crowded. Indeed, for the
past few nights it has been next t.
impossible for a man to ebtain a bed:
—unless he was well-acquainted. The
ladies of course fare’ better. Ia regard to providing accommodation: fo:
visitors, there is but one opinion, and
that is that the managera of the fair
have been exceedingly derelict in no
having. made the slightest effort_to
bee that‘ visitors of either sex are provided with information as to where
they can find a night’s lodging.
The display at the pavilion is decidedly. unique. ‘Houses, pillars,
shaite, trains of cars and even windmills, reach highin the air, and are
hhescoed and adorned ail over with
golden fruit: These structures were
Hirat built of some thin m.tvriale and
then the sides and reofa covered with
orang: s nailed oo or held against:the
frames with wire. The scenery as a
work of art is very beautiful, whatever doubts may exist as to its value
asa horticultural display: The music
is fine, indeed superb.
The other performances except
that of picking pockets (a diversion
extensively indulged in) have been
what-theatre goers would-call-decidedly flat. Neither the speech of Col.
[rish nor that. of General Chipman
created either admiration or entlusiasm. What is the cause of this total
want of unction or fervor is unknown
to me. Seme say it is because the
Orange trees around Marysville have
produced this season such small fruit,
others give different reasons.
The fair itself has brought no
‘‘emall fruit’? to the hotel men and
saloons. By the way, I am told there
is more drink generally sold in Maryscounty during a week. I don’t know
whether this speaks well for Nevada
county or ‘Il for Marysville.
I cannot tell what county gets the
first prize. Ikhnow which ought’ to
have-it.. The display of Butte county
as to quality, far excels its neighbors,
Yuba has the largest display, but
nine-out of tén of the oranges are not
fitto eat. They are small and sour,
and in this respect a good deal like
the present “brilliant’”’ leaders of the
Anti-Debris Association.
The finest oranges from Yuba
county come from, Smartsville; in fact
this is the only respectable fruit bearing the Yuba county label. Of course
any part ofthe Yuba county foothills
think it 1s~now affmitted that the
bottom lands have as yet to prove’
thier claims tobe regarded as ‘‘orange
land.” If the navel oranges from
Thermalito were really grewn there,
the district rank~ as high #a an orange
country as does Los Angeles. I say
‘*if,”? but I have not the slightest reason toconsider that the Thermalito
display is not genuine. Of course, in
these days of ‘‘fakes’’ we have to be
cautious in believing even ‘‘our own
eyes.”
Speaking of pickpockets reminds
me that the’ number of thefts reported during the fair has been notorious,
and ao far the “‘splendid” police force:
bave not arrested a single miscreant.
These officers prefer to atrest men so
drunk that they cannot run away, to
burglars’ or;even swift-looted sneak
thieves. To give some instances: A
1 well known Marysville lady: on Wednasday evening wore to the pavilion a
pair of bracelets worth $200. Their
diamond settings attracted one of the
pickpockets and he seized her wrist,
slipped off one of the clasps, and dis:
appéared in the crowd before bis
victim could ¢ven givé the alarm. ‘‘No
arreats, but’ the officers are in pursuit,” “was the latest report of this
