Size of the United States Army, The army of the United States consists of 2,167 commissioned officers and ysufficient number of enlisted men to keep thom in practice,. This nudaber is fixed by a general law at 80,000; for several years congress has been in the trabit' of eppropriating for only, 25,000, The adjutant general of the army reports the actual strength of the army._as 20,145. So there are not ten real private soldiers for every officer, é We have no fighting for our army to do. But the organization of an arury is oot an easy thing, and so we: obey the injunction, in time of peace prepare for war, just far enough to keep up a mili tary, organization of 2,000 officers and the smallest number of enlisted men that will permit the officers to keep in iititary practice. Instead of the matrimonial agency, vhich has not yet acquired the right of citizenship in Russia, gossiping match makers perambulate the country, each keeping to hie or her distrivt, and, like tions ago, everywhere sure of a welcome, scarcely taken possession OF your room in your hotel when a well. dressed man walke in, makes a profound bow, and askw-you bluntly: *‘Would your nobility think of marrying?" If excusable curiosity or a less excusable desire to exchange single for married misery prompts you to give him a civil answer, he lays album upon alts before you with the photographs of eligible brides and brideyrooms, according your sex; on which arefnscribed marginal notes containing brief but interesting de tails about the social position, fortune, expectations and drawbacks of the «rig: inal, He discusses the ‘‘points” of hig clients with charming candor and objectivity — many of these matchmakers have been horse dealers before~and refers you to rosperous murried couples who areas ppy as the day is long since he brought them together.
