Imagine acity of some 17,000 men—gamblers, saloon-keepers, miners, packers, hangers-on, and then some more gamblers, if tlie quota isn’t complete. What a wild place it was! The flutter of a woman’s petticoat oa a clotbes-liae would have drawn a bigger crowd than a triple murder, becavse it would have been rarer. The town ‘itself had settled down in a dense pine fo est on a movataia side, for all the world like a gray, moiiled cloud, pe. forated into coaniless_ individualities = the giant—t-ees:-—The™ houses were urried affairs, thrown vp almost in a. And how lavishly it was yielded to, the chasers—ihe [proton yellow stuff! At night the ceuter of atiractioa wai Barker's Exchauge, oe of the largest gambling-saloons aorth of San Francisco. Merely a rough ‘‘shake” shaaty on the outside, it was a palace within, furnished with all the glittering pa-aheinalia that gold could purchase in San Francisco and pack-mules bring over ihe mountaio trails. All sorts of games, as monte, faro and the like, were in operaiion even during'the day; but at night the place was crowded and the wildest! kind of seenes enacted. : Perhaps the most patronized of all was the “‘vingt-et-un” table presided over vy Doc Brown, the most noted gambler of those parts at the thne. Jt was no uncommoa thing to see $25,000 or $0,000 in “dust,” nuggets and coin piled up as stakes on ‘‘Doc’s” table. Several aitendants from.the gorgeous bar were kept very busy all the time serving mixed and fancy driaks at four ‘‘bits” apiece. And so the gold, wheeuled from the generous Cayote hills through the day, was sucked away at night by the leeches at Barker's. One night au unusual comimoiion might have been noticed, anda larger crowd than ever was assembled. A troupe of “thurdy-gurdies” had come to i¢wn, and old Barker, with bf usual shi¢wdoess, had-eaptured them before the oilier saloon-keepers were fa‘rly aware of their arrival and had paid them handsemely to confine their—performances-to.tie E<change. A daneinggirl—ithe chief atiraction—was given three ovaces of dusi extra to dance afew. times during the evening. Every one was on ihe aleri; the games the dispeasers of driaks were flying like meteors through the crowd whea the squeak of the bhurdy-aidy j+sirument was heard. Instantly the clivkiag of gold and the.tinkling of wiae-glaes ceased and silence fell upon tue geeat thzog. A queer affair it was—the hardy-urdy —a cross besween a violin and two or three other instruments. By vaiural descent its name pessed to the roving singers and dancers who weut wiih ii through the mountains in those days. Out upon a raised plaiform bounded the girl, A cleud of coppery gold hair, fluffed around a dark, Madonaa face; 4 great black eyes that bore the look of a hunted deer; a mass of red,-gauzy gardelighted a sculpter; a golden gauze scarf draped around. a. perfect -bust; small brown hands that: swung~and~ twirled « dainty tambourine ia accompaniment to a wild, weird dance that was as the very struggle of a soul ia Hades. What a picwituess and gloat over! The dance ceased at last, and roars of applause were mingled with the musical rattle of a shower of coia which fell at the girl’s feet—the customary tribute of . the miners to genius as they understood . it. As the dancer bowed her thaaks those nearest her noticed an unnatural paleness creep over the beantiful face. She reeled, tottered and: would haye fallin hisarms.
