Strack a Big Ledge
—
Leonard & Son have found a four
foot ledge of gold-veaving ‘ore on.the
bill half a mite above Jones Bar on
the South Yuba river. Several years
ago a quantity of wonderfully rich
float quartz was picked up in that vicin~ ity, pieves of it being worth at the rate
of $20,000 a ton, and various parties
have since been engaged at intervals in
hunting for the ledge the float came
have it. The course of the ledge appears to be such that it crosses the
river and through the territory near
the head ofthe G. V. R. and T. Co.

The State welaasdiepiote Repert . o¢
om Nevada County GeelegyThe anriferous rocks in. Nevada
county have a wide’ range ‘and cover
the yreater portion of the.county west
of the summit of the Sierra Nev .das,
and are divided into three separate
and distinet belts: the Grass Valley
Belt, the Washington. Belt, and, near
the summit, the Weadow. Lake Belt.
‘The formation in the south weat portion of the county is metamorphic slate
and schistese rocks’net known to be
auriferous, ind is @ northerly continuation of a similar belt in Placer county.
Copper, iron, magnesite and lime are
found in this belt where shown in
Geological map. Masses of sepentine
occur among these slates, the largest
of which weathers ont about a mile
west of the West branch.of Wolf
Oreék, and is probably a continuation
of the same upon which is located the
iron mines near Hotaling, in Placer
county,
About one mile west of Indian

The auriferous slates, echists, "es
metamorphic rocks join on the east
and-continue about twenty miles east=
erly to the serpentine belt near Washfngton, forming what is known as the
Grass Valley Gold Belt.. This belt is
very. wide, butit has a large area of
syenite rocks included init: In fact,
in nearly all the country north of Neva
da City and. Grass Valley, extending
west from a ling dfawa-from Banner
Mountain tu North San Juan to within
a few miles of Smartsville, the formation is’ mainly syenite with parallel
bands of hard metamorphic slates and
schists; ulso dyxea of diorite and diabase, including numerous veins of
gold-bearing quartz, some of which, in
the vicinity of Nevada City, are being
profitably worked,
South of Nevada City and pialaalitay
east of Grass Valley, Banner Mountain and North San despre the -elutepredominate.
The formation has a etrike northwest and southeast and « dip ‘nearly
vertical; inclining slightly te the
east. The slates are-higtsy altered in
the vicinity of G:ase Valley, and is
difficult. to dc termine their true position, Large masses of serpentine aud
xabro occur among the metamorphic
rocks, in places forming the wall of
some of the auriferous veins.
“The celebrated. Idaho and. Eureka
minea have a footwall of serpentine
and @ hanging wall of greenstone (diorite.)
The quartz o mines ofthe Grass Valley Gold Belt are celebrated. for their
high-grade ores and the magnitude
and permanence of the ore bodies,
The serpentine belt is very strong, varying from one half to two miles wide.
It can be readily traced from Alta on
the line of the CO, P. R. R., crossing
Bear river, Steep. Hollow, and the
South Yuba River, Devil’s Canyon;
and passing east of Snow Point and
crossing the Middle Yuba, it divides
the Grass Valley Gold Belt from the
Washington Gold Belt.
Immediately east of the serpentine
is an immense vein of ferruginous ateatite, varying from twenty toone hunr
dred aud fifty feet in width. This
immense vein is auriferous, and is being mined for gold where it crosses the
point at the forke of the South Yuba
River and Poorman’s Creek.
The ore is low grade, yielding a few
dollars per. ton, and is worked by
Huntington mills.
East of the auriferous ateatite is an
auriferous formation of black slate,
naica, tale and chlorite schists, qdarizite, and dikes of diorite and dia base,
This belt, commonly known as the
strong veins of auriferous quartz, come
in contacts and othersin fissures crossing the strike of the slates. Mavses of
infiltrated quartz occur in the black
alates, often arrying sufficient gold to
pay for the extraction.
Following up the canyon of the
‘South Yuba River, which cuts the
strike nearly at right ~ angles, the
rocks are well exposed, and afford
splendid oppurtaunities for ahogen
examinations,
About a mile east of the Washington mine the rocke begin to change
from their slaty character and become
. gradually more siliceous, schistose, . ,
and harder going east, to a point about
one half mile west of the Yuba mine.
East of this pvint the ‘formation
changes gradually to protogene, alternating with narrow belts of syenite
and schistoee rocks. _

From the Eagle Bird mine east to

DOC WILKINSON'S GOLD, :

The Republican says: Doc. Wil

in the arrest of Wilkinsen on the some~
what unique charge of stealing his own
property. Wilkinson is werking @

and Dickaon is running a stamp mill
on the Revenge property near Greenwood, A fow weeks ago Wilkinson
sent 100 tons of ore tothe mill to be
worked. ‘The rock assayed atout $100
$168 in going through Dickson’s m ill,
The charge for milling was $250, and
Dickeon informed Wilkinson that it
was his custom to retain ‘bullion until
his charges were paid or he had security for them. Wilkinson: replied
that he was willing to let Dickson keep
‘the bullion on condition that he, Wilkinson, should have the mint return.
On Saturday they came to Auburn
and went into the express office, and
Dickson placed the bullign upon the
counter and said that he wanted to
send _ it tothe mint tobe coined.. Wilkinson placed his hand over the bulhon and said: ‘‘This ia my gold, and
{ propose to. ship.itin my own name.”
A etrugyle for phe bullion followed,
enc Wilkineoty being the~ stronger
man, secured it; put it in his pocket
and watked out.
Instead of getting out am attachment
Dickson procured a warrant for Wilkinson’s arrest on a charge of robbery.
The case was heard by Justice Fulton,
and on Tuesday. Wilkinson was acquitted and discharged.
