When the blockade is raised on the railroad there will be a big business done by the company. The almanac says the rest of this month anda good part of February will be snowy and cold. The Western Union telegraph wires were not working Wednesday between The Grase Valley stores are out of shovels, The-Nevada Ci.y hardware stores have pleuty-of them at regular prices, The body ofthe late~ Benjamin Bynon was taken to Birchville Wednesday. The burial is to tuke place at San Juan, — . Tn a day or two a large force of. men will be employed in shoveling snow off the railroad track between this city and Grase Valley, The people residing along the San Juan Ridge had not till Wednesday seen a San Francisco paper since a week ago last Saturday. According to the Indian legend there was in the year of 1842 a snowstorm similur tothe present one, and when the thaw came the Sacramento Valley became a vast inland sea. Anarticle is going the rounds of the press, stating that the game of hearts, played with cards, has been introduc: ed into high c ciety and bids fair to be as popular as progressive euchre wasafew years ago. It is nothing more than the old game called ‘‘Qold Torkey.”’. The rules are. the samo; SS There igmore money in circulation jhere now than for sometime previous to thestorm. Reliable LifeInsurance at Low Rates. The Home Benefit Life Association, which wis incorporated in 1880 under the luws of the State, is the largest, oldest and most successful mutual life insurance company on the Coast. That it holds out the stronyest of searchers after * thoroughly reliable and at the same time low-priced life insurance, is evidenced most emphatically by the fact that it has during the per‘od of 11s existence paid out over half a million dollars’ losses and at a cost to policy holders of less than one-half that exacted by the the so-called ‘‘old-line’’ companies. Installmentsare payable at definite . r dates written in the policy, and these payments are solightand judiciously distributed through the year that they are scarcely felteven by a poor man. The policies are definite contracts. for the full amount written therein, and tree from all technicalities and burden+ some conditions. _The-membership is} composed of the leading business and professional_men of the Ooist, the majority of its members beingin and near the city of San Francisco, whee it is best known. : At the etid of each period of five years, division of surplus, consisting of reserve paid on each existing policy with profits from interest, and la, sed reserves, will provide a substantial reduction of futnre ‘cost. Certificates after being in force for.a period of five yeare do not lapse for non-payment of premiums so long as there remains in the reservefund an amount to the credit of such certificate applicable to the payment of premiums thereon. If at the end ofthe five-year period the member desires to surrender his policy. he is entitled to the full amount of reserve that has been paid, thus giving surrender value.’’ Another important advantage afforded by the, Association’s rules is that when a policy has been in force five years or more it is absolutely incontestable, The $2,000 policy paid tothe widow of the late Samuel M, Shurtleff isthe first loss the Association has been called upon to pay here although it has a large membership in this locality ; and the promptness with which it. tea met the loss as shown by tlie following wins for it the encomiums of all; Nevapa Crry, Jan. 11, 1890. Received from the Home Benefit Life Association two thousand dollars ($2,000), in full payment of my claim under certificate No. 10,257 which was sped” tomy ~ ‘husband; ~-Sanmuel—M: Shurtleff, now deceased, on the 18th’ day ot April, 1887.
