But there is, am t a. teas the sweetest, purest, and most i:agrant. You ask at once how it is that it is not offered for sale and that you know nothing of it. That is Q@uswered easily ; but it is necessary to present fret a tow details. The public only knows ¢we general classes, viz., the green and ‘the black teas. ~~-@reen Teas: 3 Few people know that the bright biuishgreen ¢olor of the ordinary teas exposed in the windows is not the natural color, UnPleasant as the fact may be, it is neverthelcas artificial; Prussian blue, silica, gypsum, Plambago, and other uvhealthful mineral @olors being used for this purpose “Theeffect is twofold. It not oniy makes the teaa bright, shiny, attractive green, but also permits the use of * off-color” and worthless teas, which, e@mee under the green cloak, are readily worked off as a good quality of tea. Theabom‘imable coloring practice even admits of the use of foreign substances, and the English government. which looks closer into the genwineness of its staples than ours, has in some of the alleged “finest” of teas found redried leaves, straw, fragments of mating, ticebusks, and willow leaves, In fact, il iso>enly stated by an English authority that hundreds of thousands of pounds of sloe, ash, aud willow leaves are annually imported as tea, which without the coloring process would be impossible. They report tea as one of the most notoriously adulterated articlesof commerce, ~The temptation to make sweepings and bad tea intoa merchantable product with a few cents’ worth of green coloring matter is too strong to withstand, and the worthlessness of the trash that often finds its way to this man “ket labeled “New Crop,” “ Best Quality,” “*Green Tea," etc., would simply astound the public if revealed, to say nothing of the unhealthfulness of the Prussian blue; plum-bago, gypsum, and the other mineral colors that are employed. ‘2 Black Teas. The basket and pan-fired Japan teas, as well as the Chi that may be included undee the general heading of “ black teas,” get their color ie firing or toasting process, but “mineral c ng matter is also frequently used to give @ certain desired commercial @ppearance. In fact, the) rd have a law--unde; v¢which they make seizures and de stroy adulterated products that ar not what they are represented to be. Unde, this statute thousands of pounds of tea hay: been burned because of their wholesale adui teration, ¥ Tea, by the way, is one of thé midst notori~ ously adulterated articles of commerce; ‘Nc aloe are the bright, shiny green teas arti: cially colored, but thousands of pounds o Substitutes for tea leaves are used to swe! the bulk of cheap teas; ash, sloe, and willow leaves being those most commonly used Again, sweepings from tea warehouses ar colored and sold astea. Even exhausted tea leaves gathered from the tea-houses are kept, dried, and madeoverand find their way into the cheap teas, The English government attempts to stamp this out by confiscation; but no tea is too poor for us, and the result is, that probably the poorest teas used by any nation are those eousumed in Americg: : = : Peech’s Tea is presented with the guar auty that it 1s uncolored and unadulterated : tity of the tea, and permits the use of the very cheapest teas, to argue nothing#for the deteriorating effect of excessive firing jwhich must be resorted to when & very cheap prodwet is used and an xtreme color desired, _—~~" Beech’s Tea (Sun-d. 2 Concerning sun-dried teas the peopleof the Pacific Coast have heard but little and know less, although it is extensively used where i¢ 4s known and understood. We are told that when tea is so poor it cannot be sold at heme or safely shipped tothe English markets, it is shipped to America; that we will drink anything. That may possibly be one of the rea sons we have not been offered sun-dried tena, They were good enough to send elsewhere, _ The sun-dried teas being sun-cered, ne sisted by mantpulstion or coloring, kil ab tempts at adulteration or the introduetion ef foreign leaves or materia] would be beld an@ @laring. That it is, thereford, sweeter and tar more fragrant thon the artificially colored green teas and the manipulated basket o: if ls more healthful than the mineral-colored + sive, is alse trus;-and that—is another reason . promt in it as there is in the cheap adulter. ated and colored teas. About tlie Cost of Teas. According to the custom-house reports, the emount of tea received at Ban Francisco last year (1890) was 6,840,187 pounds, and the value $966,290, or « fraction over 18¢ per pound The consumer, of which the reader was one, paid for that 1c tea all the way from 50e to $1 per pound. In other words; for that 996,259 ~worth of tea the consumer paid between four and five millions of dollars. There are your @nortnous profits, and there you will probably find the chief'reason why most of you never heard of a sun-dried tea. As the sun-dried teas have no mask, they are compelled to be absolutely pure-and of better quality than the artificially colored and manipulated teas. Hence the margins on them are emailer, and many dealers don’t care about handling them, and you know nothing about them. But it is the object of this article to tell you where you ean get them, and what to ask for, and all about them. **Beech’s Tea.”* # ch’s Tea,” guaranteed to be the pure sun-cured leaves, is now offered to the people of the Pacific Coast, It will be a revelation to you. You doubtless never saw any natural leaf, Have your grocer break open a package. It will be found in color to be just between the artificially colored green and the biack teas, and the drawn tea presents a clear, brilliant cana:y color, of delightful fragrance, It is offered to the people at 600 per pound, the same price that many artificially colored teas are sold for. But its guar. anteed: purity makes it more economical to use; for @ less quantity, say about twenty Grains, “is required per cup. As there are 7,680 grains to a pound, there will be seen to be between three and four hundred cups to the pound, or at the rate of about one fifth of @ cent per cup. Its economy is therefore manifest. It is put up'in one-pound packages *Pure’As hood?
