“> GEAIMS TO HAVE. BEEN SWINDLED.
Mrs. Minnie Youn Comms the Arrest of
Her Partner.
Oakland Times: W. M. Reese, proprietor of the Nucleus House on San Pablo
avenue, was arrested yesterday by Detec-. +
tive Shorey on the charge of obtaining
inoney under false pretenses. The complaint was made by Mrs. Minnie Vernon
that Reese had swindled her out of $850.
~aity Them thie Mast, ano Wit e-view ar} =
profitably investing her means called upon-W. H. Chittenden, a real estate dealer
whose office is on Ninth street, near
Broadway. He. informed her that he
knew of a bargain, and through the representations of Chittenden and. Reese
was induced te purchase of the latter a
half mterest in the Nucleus lodging house,
paying therefor $300 in cash and securing
the remainder of the purchase price,
$550, by jewelry.
Believing that a lease of the house could
be secured for an indefinite period, Mrs.
Vernon was astonished a few days ago te
receive an order to vacate the premises by
the first of next month. She believes that
Reese, who became her partner, was
aware the lease could not be renewed over
a month ago, and sold an interest to her
after the agent had notified him to leave.
For the present month the receipts were
$135, which Reese collected and told her
there was but $5 to divide between them as
$130 must be paid for rent of the building.
Subsequently she learned that no rent was
required for the month and caused her
partner's arrest. Reese says he held the
meney, as the owner of the house, John
©. Coleman and E. Coleman of Grass
Valley, might expect him to pay for the
~ gaonth, and he wanted to be sure of this
before dividing with Mrs. Vernon.
