AN APPALLING FACT.
How lu ‘Tho Worll Shall We Dispose.
Of Thom?
There are not less than two hundred
marriageable young ladies in Nevadsa
City. What shall be done with them‘
Must they live and die old maids?
They all came into the world expecting
to get husbands, but up to date thei:
fondest hopes have not yet been realized,
There are less than one hundred mar
riageable young men in town, and no.
over six of them are doing any courting ;
ergo, the chances of about one hundred
and ninety-four of the young ladies are
still in doubt, If there is a town in the
State that has a surfeit of young men,
it might transport some of thein here,
provided they are on.the marry.

AMMONIA AND ALUM

The.a.
_In view of what the Minnesuta Senate
has done, it is hoped that legislative
bodies in other states will soon take up
the subject of food: adulteraiion. The
subjoined list of baking powders containing ammonia and alum, compiled from
official reports and published in a recent
numberof the Scientitic American, is
given below. ‘It deals in a direct man:
ner with‘an evil which must be cut down,”
said the Chicago Tribune in commentingon the Scientific American's report. Following is a partial list of

What woman would use an ammonia
or alum baking powder if she knew it?
Such powders not only undermine the
health, but ainmonia gives to the complexion a sallow or blotched appearance.
The presence of ammonia or alum in a
baking powd:r, however, can easily be
detected,
To Dergcr Aumonia.—Mix one heaping teaspoonful of baking powder with
one teaspoonful of water in a tin cup; boil
thoroughly for a few moments, stir to preVent burning, and if ammonia is present
you can smell it in the rising steam. Or,
place acan of the suspected powder top
down on a hot stove for a minute or two,
then take off the cover and.smell.
To Derzcr Atum.—Alum powder can
be usually detected by putting a couple
of teaspoonfuls of the powder in a glass
of cold water. If no effervescence, that
is bubbling or simmering, takes place,

What The Crew Thinks.
The sentiment of the Baltimore's crew
regarding the attack made on them at
Valparaiso has fonnd expression in the
following poem by Jolin Shea, a coalheaver;
Only give us your permission
We beg of you Uncle Sam,
To avenge the death of our shipmates
On the miscreant Chilean,
Ouly give us yeur permission.
‘And the duty we'll perform;
~With shot and shell we'll make them
yell,
And wish the’d never been born,
This insignificant nation,
Of cannibal degenerates
Has insulted our flag and nation,
Besides murdering our shipmates.
Men, women and children are the same; .
They scorn the civilized class ;
Their intelligence they despise ;
They mock us as we pass.
But give us your permission,
And we'll make them rue the day
That they ever insulted our flay
Or obstructed us on our way.
They would never kill another man .
Of our gallant and good ship's crew,
For we would uot leave a savage

Taken for a Crank.
A semi-fiendish delight often seems to
possess people of strong nerves in sneering at those with weak ones, The irritability of the nervous hypochiondriac is
ridicuted as natural ill temper. ‘The very
genuine and distressing symptoms from
which he suffers are made light of. ‘‘He”
or “‘she is a crank!” is the cheerful sort
‘of sympathy with which the nervous invalid meets from the unfeeling and the
thoughtless, At the same time no complaint is more defined and real, nene has
® mure easily explainable origin when it
is chronic. “Imperfect digestion and assimilation are alwaya acoompanied by

He Could Have Gone For Two Days If He

A few days ago one of Blank’s clerks
at Grass Valley was married, His

Clerk—'‘‘ Mr. Blank, can I be ex

Employer—'' Certainly ; if there is
anything rushing I will take your place.”
MORNING,
Clerk—‘*Mr, Blank, you must excuse
me if I am a litt'e late this morning, for

you tell me about it! I would have excused you for two days,”

Nevada Gity adios, Read This Aud ‘Think
It Over,
During a discussion relating to the management of husbands, Mrs. Yardley, a New
York literary, woman, said that one great
danger to marital happiness arose from
seeking outside sympathy when the
charms of romance, poetry and sentiment
troubles of married people,” she said,
“should be guarded as sacred secrets, for
then the differences are more easily. adjusted and harmony may "be restored,
relation. Another.ig. that -man, ‘in his
friction with the world, forgets how
wearing are the small irritations of life.
He is tired and does not wish to listen to
the uninteresting details of a: woman's
small trials.
«The wife grows still and preoccupied
and. dull, which furnishes him with an
excuse for neglecting her, 80 they drift }
away from each other. A woman should
never allow hersalf to grow dull and uninteresting if she would keep her husband
a lover, If she would preserve: the
romance of the courting time she must
be as entertaining and anxious to please
as in the days of the wooing.”

We don’ know whether we have been

that way. We are holding a bag, but a

Some years ago we saw that some of
the rivers of the State were being filled
with mining debris ; that large. areas of
rich land were being destroyed, and we
went of the warpath. Thore were those
nearer the scene of action. who took the
lead, and wo aspired only tobe’ a first
class lieutenant. We havé held alieutenancy fora dozen or more years. We
went up into the mountains with our captains and others, some few years ago,
and the miners treated us right royally.
Even at that time we had been so active
that many took us for one of the captains. The miners showed us many places .
at which restraining dams could be built,
and they said they would build the dams
according to the plans and under the superintendence of engineers appointed by
the Valley peeple. ;
Our captains said, ‘‘No, sires, Rob-,
ert,” and we echoed ‘‘Bob.” We racked
our brain for reasons (vo show why, this
might not be: \Ve traveled, we wrote,
we paid priaicrs ; attended conventions
‘and executive committees, The fight was
made and the courts said we were right
and that if any fellow pestered us with
slickens to jail he should go. We patted
ourself on the stomach and said,’ flattering like, ‘‘Green, old fel, you have made
a pretty good fight—you have helpéd do
this.”
But. the miners had a big feast the
other day at which our old and highly .eateemed friend, Jake Neff, was master of
ceremonies, and Placer county paid $1000
towards defraying the expenses, and our
captains said they would be magnanimous
and let the dams be built, and that they
would not only permit it, but ask our
good Uncle Samuel to pay for the same.
Now, where are we? There is not a
snipe in our sack.
