FRIDAY, JANUARY 30,1891.
ANEW ENTERPRISE,
An Iron Mining Company Cemeing to Operate Efere,
There is a probability that a prominent iron .mining company having
smelting and other extensive works
in Ogden and San Francisco, will
shortly begin operations at this city.
The company has this week through
M. H. Brewer of ®an Francisco made
eight locations along tle rich and extensive deposits of iron ore situated
on the northerly side of Deer creek,
beginning at a point about” two and
a hialf miles below towr and continuing to .within @ mile of Newtown
which latter place lies west from here.
Negotiations forthe property of Mrs.
Hawke, forming the premst eastern
boundary of the Company’s claims,
are now pending = likely. a be consumimated.
The new locations are known as
the Flora, San Francisco, Hidden
Treasure, Iron Duke, Iron King, Lily,
Monarch Sad Annie.
The werk of prospecting the. pro:
peity will be commenced without upnecessary delay, and it is expecteu
* thatthe erection of a emelter will immediately follow the favorable devellopments which are confidently anticipated because of what has heretofore
been demonstrated as tu the extent
and value of the depesits.
> A big iron mine in full blast in
this immediate vicinity would. prove
an important factor in adding to -the4
prosperity of the comtunity.

The Anharn Argus tells the telloting, and the J. B. Patterson whose
name is mentioned will at once be
recognized as “our Jim,’’ once Assemblyiman f from this county:
“Judge A. P, Catlin of Sacramento
came to Auburn on Monday to take
Judge Prewett’s place on the bench
and hear the Eclipse Minecase. The
whole Auburn bar, assisted by detachmeuts of lawyers from all the adjacent counties, was in case, and before night Judge Catlin wished he was
deud orinjail. Fifteen lawyers said:
“May it please the Court,” and buried
the clerk under a pile of demurrers,
intervenors, exceptions, cross-complaints, answers, cross-counters, upper-cutsshalf-nelsons, . hammer-locks,
mortgages, ‘mechanics’ liens, writs ot
habeas corpus, ‘ne excais, nol prosequis, ,ultravires, modus vivendi,
duuble-shuffies, etc. Then they exa
} plained the case. in. fifteen different .
ways, and no matter which one bad
the floor, all the reat were against him
and ebjectei to everything that he
said. The Judge hetened the whole
aiternoon, and then he took the papers howe and studied them all night
tu get a general idea of what it was all
about.
What the suits are about, the dou
aod the lawyers alone know, but a
oirdseye view of the case is about like
this; J.-B. ~Patterson-owned the
Eclipse mine at. Ophir and bonded in
to CO. A. Poage, an ex-preacher, who
wenteast.and gold it to a lot of folke
who didn’t know any more about a
aine than a cat knows about heaven.
tney formed a corporation, and Patterson took a tenth of the stock and a
job as Superintendent at $300 a month.
Poage took some of the stock and the
Vice Presidency at a salary of $400 «
month. Mr. Lewis, another preacher, got the Secretaryship, aad auch
viher salaried places as could be
found or invented were given to relaUves. of the. promoters of the euterprise. The company erected a huge
ali, on tick, boaght expensive machinery—on tick—and hired men te .

tick—wasn’t rich enough to pay giltedged salaries to all the ex-preacierr
in the concern-and-leave-anythiag for
the“men who did the work, and when
the miners had lived about as long ac
hey could on.Poage’s promises to pay,
they quit digging ore and put laborers’ liens upor-the_mine and mill.
Pattersen-alse filed liens for-bis salary
as Superintendent, aud the mine War
shut down.
Some of the miners had dependent
families, and the-failure of the company to pay wages caused them a
great deal of actual suffering. One
man named Trevathan remained at
the mine, after it was shut down, to
take care of the property, relying upon Pouge’s promise to pay him his
wages, which amounted to nearly $40u
overdue, The firms that sup plieu
some of the machinery took less stock
in promises, and removed their property—from-the-mill_.The. swindled
minera came up to Auburn to see
Poage and Lewis about six weeks
ago, and Pouge promised that he
would pay them their wages on a
certain evening, When that evening
arrived, Poage and Lewis had gone
away. They left on the morning
train, and Poage had a pocketful ei
large .greenbacks when he went
away. Neither one of them has
been seen here since, and the miners
are atill whistling for their money.
The case being heard by Judge
Qatlin is a complication of liens ana
claims: against the. mine and of the
parties against each other. J. B.
Patterson is represented by Hale &
Craig and attorney Holl. Hamiiton
and Hamilton are attorneys for the
laborera who hold liens. Wallace &
Wallace appear for Yowle Bros. who
‘hold liens for lumber supplied for
ouilding the mill. Chamberlain and
Searles represent an eastern stockholder, Mre. Preble, who loaned §4,000tothecompany. Attorney Lardner
appears ior the Placer County Bank,
Judge Spear represents Pouge who
bas eéme sort of claim against the
company, and Tuttle, Fulweiler dnd
. Tabor appear for the Eclipse Mining
Company, Attorney Oatman is looking out for the interest of Schaw, Inyram & Batcher, who sold machinery
to the company and never -got paid
_. for it,
‘One of the lawyers amused himeelt
in court yesterday by sketching a diagram of the case; . Hedrew' a gigantic spider web, tenanted by a dozen
or fifteen spiders bearing the names of
attorneys, When asked, ‘Where are
the flies?” he replied, ‘‘They are the
lien holders.” :

The water of the springs in the

The approaches-to the new ‘bridge
across Deer creek at the Anthony

and as there is likely to ‘be a sterm at

will be liable to find themselves literally ‘‘in the seup.””

they had stopped here long enough
there would ‘have been treuble a

eaten their fill, they returned lazy and
contented, not near so ferocious as
when they went up. They spent Sunday here and amused themselves by
trying to find where the new town hall
was located, Several linen duster
