Friday Evening’s Instatlatien
and Complimentary Ball.
The.Pythian demonstration at Armory Hall on Friday evening yras the
greatest of the kind ever occuring in
the county under the auspices of any
secret society. Nine hundred invitations had been. issued to gentlemen
not belonging ta the order and those
invitations were largely responded to.
Most of the gentlemen brought one or
more ladies apiece, and although there
‘Were seats provided for five hundred
people, not only were those seats all
occupied fat an early. honr, but every
available. inch of standing room was
taken. @ aitendance is estimated
to have approximated over one thousand,
The interior of the ball had never
before presented such an attractive
appearance. The soufherly half of the
main floor was diyided off from the
portion allotted to the spectators, and
was fitted up as a lodge-room with the
Officers’ stations on raised platforme
and cliairs placed in the form of: a
double triangle for the use of the
Knights. Back of the Chancellor’s
-station-were the oratér; the ‘chaplain
and the musicians.

taste. .Thegirders overhead were
covered .wi ; :
neath them amd extending the full
width and length of the ceiling were
two mammoth triangles meeting at
their apexes, these triangles being
made of bunting in the national colors. Festouns of fringed draperies in
the colors of the order reached clear
around the walls on alevel with the
balcony of the gallery. At frequent
intervals upon the festooning were
triangles of ferns and evergreens in
union with emblematic letters. Upon the wall at the head. of the hall
was a very large banner uf the order,
this being framed with evergreen. The
doors and windowa were draped with
-three-weeks-ago she-was-whileappar} ?ottieres-of rich materials and rithiant+
enily enjoying fair health stricken
down by nervous derangement. From
this she seemed to haverecovered,
and was around the house, Friday
evening: she suddenly placed her
hundsto her head and exclaimed that

Hic Umprefitable Operations at
thie City im the Seventies.
In 1875 there came to this city and
remained a year or two a brether to
the now celebrated scientist of lymph
fame, Prof. Koch. He was a tall,
soldierly looking fellow of perhaps 26
years, full of energy and ambition,
and positive in his convictions. He
had a sulphuret saving machine with
which be experimented st the Proviand was for a short time engaged in
some capacity at the Banner wine.
He went from here to Grass Valley
and also tried hia machine there without success. He contracted debts for
board aud the like in both towns, but
as he had occasional remittances from
Germany and was an honest fellow he
eventually paid them.
In 1876 the Professor, who was one
of seven commissiunere sent by the
Prussian Government to the centennial exposition at Philadelphia, came
to this city to see his brother, but the
they did not meet.
The brother afterwards continued in
San Francisco his experinfents in devising gold-saving machinery, but his:
efforts were not in-any degree successful. He was employed for several
years by Adolph Sutro as an engineer . .
in the Sutro tunnel and at Sutro
