Ormonvy, Jan. Ist, 1802.
“pivor Tranxscrier—Late last evening, whilefondly—eoquetting with—-good:
old Morpheus, and I should judge at the
time fully half way on-the read’to dreamland, I heard but very indistinctly the
clock (not grandfather’s old one) slowly
toll the midnight hour, On investigating
the matter I‘discovered that it was the
fleath knell of the old_year and the adThe_weird“and
solemn sound that the clock in striking
seemed to me to make at the ‘time very
forcibly reminded—me-of-a-certain event
of my_life which occurred—mere-than—t
third of a century ago—an average lifetime.
tant day, the circumstances at the time
were substantially as follows :
Late on a certain evening in the tall of
1858, while living: inNevada City, 4d
heard, under circumstances over which I
had nio control, a little silver bell slowly
aud solemnly toll the same hour. The
recollection of the time, the place, or
what occasioned’ that little bell to sound

thinking of what kid of a cyclone-was
going to, strike next. — There were
present, besides myself, some fifty or
sixty of Nevada City’s and Grass Valley’s most respected citizens, all of
whom while in an attitude of prayer
heard ‘that little bell. toll the hour of
high twelve, and not one of them to
their dying day can or ever will forget
the doingsof that eventful evening.
But where are they all today ? Like the
old year, they have disappeared. Some
are here and some are theré, but the majority of that mystic number have un
questionably crossed over the dark and
swiit river, never to return.
The oll year that has so 1eceritly
passed away proved to :be an eventful
one in a great anany respects. Some
were good, sofne were bad, and many
were indifferent ; but it is my individual
opinion that the bad side of the scales
will pull down the heaviest when everybody is corre tly ‘weighed in the balance
on'that last duy, when, according to the
teachings of the Seriptures, the lambs
and the goats are to be separated. The
la.bs (not Chris.’ Buckley’s), meaning
the good people, it is said, are to be by
the good “angels chaperoned up to
elysian fields, the abode of the-good after
death, while the goats (thé bad people
and the largest crowd) are to be driven
by the d:vil himself down to~hell and
everlasting punishment.” Like Bob
Ingersoll, say if that is the kind of an
uumerciful God that we have, I, for one,
want nothing to do with Him.
During the old year our granaries were
tiled to overflowing ; our people now
have enough of the staff of life on\hand
to feed the people of the whiole world.
But alas! there are many other places on
the globe where their crops have proved
almost an entire failure during the past
year. , &
There were wars and rumors of wars,
false prophets and true ones while the
old year was in existence. In Spain,
Japan, China ° rand many ther parts of
the world there were devastating floods
and earthquakes that destroyed millions
upon nillions’ worth of valuable
property, and many thousands of lives
yere lost in consequence. Still this
little spherical ball, the earth, that we
are all clinging so tightly to with a
death grip, keeps’ right along whirling
us all around our solar system at. the
astonishing rate of one million, five hundred thousand miles in every twentyfour hours. During the! old year, according to statistics, there were born in
the whole world 36, 816, 417 and one.
sixth babies, which is at the rate of
seventy births per. minute. At the same
tine there were 31,556,929 deaths, or at
the rate of one for every second of time
during whe entire year. At the above
rate.of increase the world has gained in
population during the past twelve
months exactly 5,259,488,

our crack irenclads. Sometimes, it is
considered the best of policy not to fight,
but to run away that one may live to
fight another day,
In a -comparatiyely short time after
the Italian episode Uncle-Sam’s demeanor in international affairs had
assumed. an entire different aspect:
The brave little Clilian government
had unintentionally, through a mob in.
the city of Valparaiso, committed an

standing in the shoes of Chili at the

people, would our goverment have been

“During the old year our” people” experienced many severe and trying mi;fortunes, such as disastrous fires, floods,
earthquakes, railroad collisions and explosions of every description.
In the meantime we had cataclysms,
blizzards, tornadoes aad ‘big and little
cyclones without nuniber. An intinitesimal little runt of a cyclone swooped

Dakota, scooped up the most valuable
portions of two or three of her richest
and most prosperous counties and
dumped thein over the line on° Canaciau soil. Still, for a wonder, nobody

The old year also produced an wnprecedented large crop of ‘Cleveland

State Analyst, Prof, Rising, Restates
Some baking Powder Facts,
A inean action generally recoils upon
its auther. Recently a baking powder
concern has been attempting by the publication of cooked-wp interviews and
blackguard advertisments, to injure the
reputation of the baking powder best
known and most used in this community.
Chis has brought out a letter from Prof,
Rising, of the California State Univer.
sity and Analyst to the State Board of
Health, in which he says:
“I wrote the report of the committee of
the Mechanics’ Fair on baking powders
two years ago, awarding the medal te the
Royal Baking Powder Company for the
puri-y an” icare in the preparation: of
their baking powder. This report was
made out after careful chemical analysis
ov my part and expressed my views at
the time, and I have had no occasion to
change my opinion of the merits cf the
Koyal Baking Powder since. Please tefer
to that report.
The report to. which .Prof. Rising refers is as follows:
' “Your committee have made a very
careful examination of the Royal Baking
Powder, and are satisfied that it fulfihs
all the requirements which the public can
make ef a baking” powder, For purity
aad care in preparation it. equals any in
market, and-our test shows that it has
greater leavening power than any other of
which we have any knowledge.
